OUR COUNTRY IS A COUNTRY OF CORRUPT POLITICAL HAPPENINGS LADROES DECLARED IN BRAZIL WE ARE At THE MERCY OF THE LUCK WHICH MEANS IT DOES NOT HAVE ANYONE IN HERE HAVE LACK OF EDUCATION HEALTH SAFETY VANDALISM FINALLY EVERYTHING IS LACKING AND THE POLITICAL HAPPENINGS DIVERTING MONEY FROM THE COFFERS GOOD.

There’s less lost to machine translation here than to Bill Murray in Sophia Coppola’s film.

However, Babylon seemed to provide free service for about only 100 words at a time, making the fashioning of this post a bit tedious.

Although foreign (to English) languages were the bane of my existence in high school and college, I recall the more recent marks of a German friend studying to become a translator: “It makes a difference if you actually have something to do with what you’re learning.”  It feels true, as I feel very helpless reading in Portuguese, guessing at meaning, and turning the whole over to software for a rough translation.

Here without polish provided by interpolation is what else my correspondent had to say:

By example, Não will have bed for patients due to a lack of public investment.

Imagine our periphery,do not have basic sanitation and are going to take this money, that should be spent on this, guys make football stadium, but what is the idea? Delaying the works, take a long time to that in doing so, she has no competition and she is super billed and this overpayment goes to the same pockets where were stop the large amount of money from the works of pan American, without which no one would be punished, then, are giving a coup on our money.

AND shameful has no remedies in health posts that here call of Sus that is shameful to say single health system ,and now come the 2010 world cup, which will be in the winter where there is going to be a lot agglomeration of people and the Brazilian has not received the vaccine had priority only to Pregnant is more elderly are not those that are going to stadium and yes the more young people.

And at this time it is very cold here where c moro until snow falls little more drops that is Curitiba Parana ,finally was not the time of the world cup here in Brazil so much that we Brazilians are well disgusted with this ,because this missing all safety health education ,and now very urgent mass vaccination and this is Mr. James I hope you really understand our parents this chaos our president not this nor ai pra these priorities.

Is it machismo that puts a higher premium on football prestige than on pride in national health care?

I don’t know.

The summary of complaints, however, would seem to indicate that axis, which is the same displayed by Russian President Putin when “pledging” $10 million in humanitarian aid to Syria while spending $51 billion on the winter games in Sochi.  For Brazilians:

  • Short on hospital beds for lack of public investment;
  • Short on basic sanitation (and I presume in the vicinity of investment in a great football stadium or other sports structure and infrastructure);
  • Insufficient in-state disease prevention and general health care for international stadium crows; moreover, by inference, it appears flu vaccinations my be doled out according to frailty (for the pregnant and more elderly, is what it appears my correspondent wrote) rather than general population needs for prevention.

By way of the magic of the Internet, Facebook supports at least these two pages bearing the name of the President of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff:

https://www.facebook.com/SiteDilmaRousseff

https://www.facebook.com/DilmaRousseffNao

If The Power is not a dictator, I think it generally better to work with it than not, but the internal politics cited and plus foreign dealings with Belgium-owned Texas oil refineries suggests The Power Presidential had best toughen up to handlers or the corrupt within the government rather than to detractors, for the detractors are right on the money, so to speak, as regards the better values of a decent society plus — as suggested in the previous post — the absolute necessity NOW of land use / urban / rural planning and economic development that seeks to include all — that’s my communitarian stance — rather than exclude many and in that way inadvertently pit all against all.

Israel

I don’t know what Israel has been doing with sports culture: its prestige stems from other sources of strength, starting (just my opinion) with its advanced national defense community, and with that followed by the high technology community developed to deal with and produce opportunity out of its economic and physical environments, and then health care sector, also high tech but boosted by the extraordinary ethics that accompany providing health services (in Israel, politics stop at the clinic or hospital door, and patients are treated as patients free of the advantages or burdens of other identity).  I’ve dragged the Jewish State into this because of its national commitment to health care.

Related: Hadassah International

That noted, about 1.7 million Israelis live in poverty.

I would have to look to be certain, but I would bet that few to none, if any, if ever, are left to die on the floor of a hospital.

Brazil, economic stress, income inequality

So what does it mean to be extremely privileged in a third world country? It means you can leave when things get ugly.

Froio, Nicole Hernandez.  “On Foreigner’s Privilege During the World Cup.”  Words by Nicole Froio, April 21, 2014.

* * *

 Focusing on what I’ve come to call the “Islamic Small Wars” leaves out a lot of conflict involving autocratic and corrupt governments or, as perhaps may be happening with Brazil (and from this the United States is not immune) befuddled economics leading to gross income disparity and a related host of security and stability issues.

Brazil appears to have a burgeoning economy but, perhaps, a deeply skewed and unbalanced economic and social system, and that rightly calls to action or presence a new journalism and politics.

* * *

The prompt I got before creating this link-forwarding post came by way of Facebook and in Spanish, so, starting from just about scratch, a quick look-up of relevant terms brought the latest framing of the problem to the desktop: Brazilian pride and private interest and some shenanigans between have anchored major sports events that have become a foil for liberal complaint.  Beyond posture and sentiment, of course, are real people captive in constrained and difficult lives kept so by either political neglect or political force.  Either way, the communitarian needs of the state have not been addressed effectively by way of economic development processes combined with political and social activism.

My introduction to this scenario: Kibera Slum, Nairobi, Kenya.

It’s the same thing, or at least at a distance it looks that way.

Kenya, if acting with both economic and social vision, could distribute the slum’s population to new towns served by rail and developed as manufacturing and transfer points.

Why not?

However, I haven’t seen that idea — mine — tested, lol, but it would seem the labor’s readily available and the land requirement very small in light of the size of immediate urban density and economic distribution issues.

Perhaps like Kenya, Brazil too finds it easier to police and suppress its disenfranchised than engage in aggressive urban and rural (land use) planning, population redistribution (eminent domain may be applied as necessary), appropriate economic development, and perhaps a little chit-chat about family.

Additional Reference

The latest WordPress upgrade altered the link-drag-and-drop that lent itself to “scraping” as well as the development of lengthy reference, so little had to be keyed.  Now if I want to share  URL, I either key it in the academic manner, embed it behind a phrase in a sentence, or copy-and-paste, leaving the address data unadorned.  So I have chose that method here.

Epigram

Hillel the Elder

"That which is distasteful to thee do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and study."

"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? If not now, when?"

"Whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world."

Oriana Fallaci
"Whether it comes from a despotic sovereign or an elected president, from a murderous general or a beloved leader, I see power as an inhuman and hateful phenomenon...I have always looked on disobedience toward the oppressive as the only way to use the miracle of having been born."

Talmud 7:16 as Quoted by Rishon Rishon in 2004
Qohelet Raba, 7:16

אכזרי סוף שנעשה אכזרי במקום רחמן

Kol mi shena`asa rahaman bimqom akhzari Sof shena`asa akhzari bimqom rahaman

All who are made to be compassionate in the place of the cruel In the end are made to be cruel in the place of the compassionate.

More colloquially translated: "Those who are kind to the cruel, in the end will be cruel to the kind."

"The purely righteous do not complain about evil, rather they add justice.They do not complain about heresy, rather they add faith.They do not complain about ignorance, rather they add wisdom." From the pages of Arpilei Tohar.

"The risk of a wrong decision is preferable to the terror of indecision."

Douglas Adams
"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" Epigram appearing in the dedication of Richard Dawkins' The GOD Delusion.

Tanit Nima Tinat
"Who could die of love?"

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

Positively Orwellian: Comment Responding to Claim that the Arab Assault on Israel in 1948 Had Not Intended Annihilation

“Revisionism” is the most contemptible path that power takes to abet theft and hide shame by attempting to alter public perception of past events.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
