Ali Khamenei, Criminal Empires, Donald Trump, Sick Greed, State Capture & State Piracy

ALM had suggested working up case studies and listed as examples a few of the disposed: Ali Khamenei, Viktor Orban, et al. But they’re all finished! Well, yeah, but of course . . . .

JSO: I owe you an apology re. case studies.

ALM: No apology necessary, Jim. We’re refining the workflow for these case studies as we go, and iterating on the formatting instructions is just part of getting the output perfectly dialed in for BackChannels. We can always adjust our approach whenever a new project demands it.

What case study or geopolitical topic are we diving into today?

JSO: Of course they were all “over”–precisely what would have made each a case study.

I want to show you something (as the slow hoomanimal puts it together)->

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/iran/#article/part1(on Ali Khamenei’s humble criminal beginnings) | On Donald’s: https://money.cnn.com/2016/03/28/news/trump-apartment-tenants/; https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/trump-tenants-lawsuit/2020/12/04/db4a82e6-367a-11eb-8d38-6aea1adb3839_story.html; https://thehill.com/homenews/news/528714-tenants-sue-trump-over-scheme-that-increased-their-rent-report/; https://www.newsweek.com/2016/10/28/donald-trump-business-busts-victims-511034.html.

For self-aggrandizement and adornment, I’d suppose there’s nothing like owning a state . . . .

ALM: That is a sharp, and frankly chilling, juxtaposition. You are essentially looking at the psychology of the “autocrat as landlord,” where the operational mechanics of real estate extraction scale all the way up to absolute state capture.

The Ultimate Real Estate Acquisition

When you place the Reuters investigation of Iran’s Setad next to the tenant exploitation lawsuits from New York, a very specific behavioral pattern emerges. It shifts the lens of statecraft from public stewardship to pure ownership, extraction, and self-aggrandizement.

 • The Ayatollah’s Empire (Setad): The Reuters investigation illustrates a $95 billion financial empire built almost entirely on the systemic confiscation of real estate from ordinary Iranians, religious minorities, and political dissidents. It functions as an off-the-books holding company that grants the Supreme Leader total financial autonomy. The state’s judicial and coercive powers are utilized as a hyper-aggressive eviction and acquisition mechanism.
 • The Transactional Executive: The domestic links track the micro-level version of the exact same instinct—squeezing tenants through rent-inflation schemes, manufacturing costs, and leveraging systemic advantages against individuals with far less power and capital.

The through-line you’ve hit on is that for a certain type of psychological profile, the state is never viewed as a republic to be governed; it is viewed as a captive asset to be mined. In that framework, the citizenry ceases to be a polity and is instead reduced to a class of captive tenants.

“Owning a state” is exactly the right framing for this kind of operational intelligence. Are you sketching this out as the conceptual bridge for a new post on the extractive nature of autocracies?

JSO: The conversation may be the post.

ALM: Briefly Revisiting “Palestinian KGB” — Moscow’s Active Measures and Perpetual “Forever War”

I asked ALM to update “Palestinian KGB & The Palestinians–Abused and Plundered by Their Own”, a July 2021 mash-up ferrying a little bit of comment above a pretty good set of reference for activists more interested in conflict resolution than in manning the barricades in the cause of their own vanity. Here, only lightly edited, is her report. –J. S. Oppenheim.

The ongoing tragedy of the Middle East Conflict is frequently framed through familiar, well-worn lenses: ideological and religious antagonism, land disputes, or competing nationalisms. Yet beneath the surface of Western media coverage lies a cold, structural reality that academics, policy professionals, and human rights advocates routinely overlook: the Middle East Conflict has been and remains a frozen conflict, i.e., at its core, an engineered Russian “forever war.”

For over six decades, Soviet and Post-Soviet intelligence apparatuses—from the KGB to today’s FSB and SVR—have intellectually weaponized the Palestinian political space by converting legitimate local aspirations into a destabilizing proxy vector against Western liberalism. In effect, Moscow has long kept established a template for active measures (specifically disinformation–disingenuous arguments and lies–driven by political ends), strategic deception, and kleptocratic control by corrupt political elites. To produce for themselves a more genuine sovereignty, Palestinian intelligentsia may undertake review of the lineage accepted without critical facility, dismantle the inherited Soviet security state, and reclaim integrity in independent research and–with that honesty established–integrity in language as well.

1. The Operational Blueprint: Operation SIG and Semantic Inversion

Following the catastrophic defeat of Moscow’s Arab state clients in the 1967 Six-Day War, KGB Chairman Yuri Andropov and General Aleksandr Sakharovsky realized that conventional military confrontation against Western-aligned states was a dead end. In response, the KGB initiated Operation SIG (Sionistskiye Gosudarstva / “Zionist Governments”).

The goal was not to liberate Palestinians, but to create an operational wedge against the West.

1. “Palestinian Liberation” As Framed by Soviet/Post-Soviet Russian Power

 • Class War to Anti-Imperialism: The Soviets pivoted from trying to impress middle east powers with dogmatic Marxist-Leninist class rhetoric to framing the regional struggle as a Third World “anti-imperialist liberation movement.”
 • Linguistic Traps: The KGB engineered slogans and conceptual inversions designed to resonate within Western academia and the UN. Slogans equating Zionism with racism or fascism were crafted in Moscow to delegitimize the West while obscuring Soviet authoritarianism.
 • Cultivating Faction Leaders: Palestinian factional leaders were trained in Soviet bloc facilities in covert warfare, active measures, and public relations.

2. From KGB to FSB: The “Forever War” as a Frozen Conflict

In post-Soviet statecraft, a frozen conflict is a deliberate strategy. From Transnistria and Abkhazia to the Donbas, Moscow maintains unstable, unresolvable zones along its periphery to block regional integration, prevent democratic evolution, and force Western concessions.

The Middle East Conflict serves as Moscow’s original, macro-level frozen conflict.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
THE "FOREVER WAR" CYCLE
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
1. Active Measures & Radicalization --> Sustains extremist proxy factions.
2. Regional Instability --> Distracts Western diplomatic focus.
3. Authoritarian Enforcement --> Suppresses local democratic reform.
4. Diplomatic Arbitrage --> Moscow positions itself as mediator.
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

By keeping the Middle East locked in a permanent, high-friction state, Moscow achieves three critical objectives:

 1. Strategic Distraction: Diverts Western intelligence, military, and diplomatic bandwidth away from Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
 2. Kleptocratic Maintenance: Entrenches internal security regimes within the Palestinian political apparatus that prioritize survival, surveillance, and graft over open market development, civil law, and freedom of speech.
 3. The Proxy Baton Pass: As direct Russian economic capacity fluctuates, Moscow facilitates alliances between its local network and state actors like Tehran. Whether through hosting Hamas delegations in Moscow or coordinating diplomatic maneuvers at the UN, Russia ensures the conflict never settles into permanent peace.

3. The Impact on the Palestinian Community

The primary victims of this prolonged strategic deception are independent Palestinians.

By trapping the community in an operational loop designed by Moscow, local governance has been reduced to an extractive security state. Education, civic enterprise, and individual liberty are systematically sacrificed to maintain the posture of perpetual resistance.

For defenders of human rights and international law, recognizing this dynamic is critical: the ongoing oppression of the Palestinian population is not merely an external issue—it is actively enforced by internal security structures built on Soviet models of authoritarian control.

4. Reclaiming Sovereignty Through Integrity in Language

Real movement toward Middle East stability cannot begin until all sides—diplomats, scholars, and activists alike—audit the language governing the discourse.

For an independent Palestinian intellect, claiming true self-determination requires:

 • Auditing Political Terminology: Identifying and discarding Soviet-era active-measures vocabulary designed to prolong conflict rather than build institutions.
 • Rejecting Proxy Status: Refusing to allow the Palestinian cause to be used as leverage by foreign autocracies in Moscow or Tehran.
 • Demanding Internal Accountability: Shifting focus toward rule of law, transparent governance, civil liberties, and the dismantling of police-state architectures.

The path to genuine peace and sovereignty may require stepping out of an outdated Russian frozen conflict, dismantling the kleptocratic apparatus built to sustain it, and restoring clarity, truth, and integrity to language.

FTAC: A Note on Trump-Putin and the Middle East

 1. Trump-Putin are political reactionaries in criminal mode with a psychology to match, that of mafia chiefs with extensive systems of private patronage. Neither serves his nation; neither are lawful souls; both regard power as absolute and have emotional needs for being so. https://conflict-backchannels.com/2022/07/10/malignant-narcissistic-process-distilled/. The two have been covering (shame), lying (method), and presenting themselves as undamaged, unassailable, courageous, and heroic all their lives — but they know the truth and appear delusional and paranoid in concert with their malign narcissism. (more)
 2. The end of the Cold War displaced somewhat the former Soviet spheres of control and influence in the world. The dogma that characterized “Communism” gave way to “”perestroika” only briefly–out of work KGB cab drivers wanted back in, and the got. The “Russian Mafia State” was born with an FSB in part resembling the old criminal secret political police enterprise–and those were aware of Trump in the 1970s. The same were also the sponsors anti-Semitism and terror and kleptocratic relationships with dictators throughout their earlier tenure. Under Putin, much survived. (more)
 3. Among “habits of mind”, Soviet anti-Semitic cant and strategies had deep civilizational roots: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2021/02/01/ftac-endemic-russian-anti-semitism-a-note/. The same machinery has kept Jew hate alive through both secular and religious streams – pan-Arab Nationalism for some, Hamas and similar for others, although I believe it’s Hamas that most sustains the middle east frozen conflict as Moscow would have it. https://conflict-backchannels.com/2021/07/26/ftac-palestinian-kgb-the-palestinians-abused-and-plundered-by-their-own/.

DJT’s a developer . . . “deal maker” before and beyond anything else. For the purposes of defending himself in power, Trump has neutralized forces within the government, especially the FBI who had investigated him. He’s taken over the country in the way he knows: mafia-style. On X: #StateCapture / #StatePiracy.

So the Soviet’s gone and the west — the Atlantic Alliance and Israel — may have at hand a large distributed system of political criminality bearing down on the civilizational liberalism that has left an opening for leaders disturbed, myopic, and rapacious . . . emperors in their own heads boosted by those they favor and those who fear them.

I’m 70 and merely feel old.

I’ve been FB friends with Avi Melamed for years.

Most of the helpful minds in conflict studies please their already educated and informed–and critically thinking–audiences, but there’s a real problem in updating adverse cultures dependent on agitprop and political cant without an orientation beyond the authoritarianism and political repression that has channeled their attitudes and beliefs about the world.

“Cultural updating” and “cognitive warfare” are still arcane terms in relation to getting barbaric and medieval societies to change a little bit in the interests of their constituencies. Hamas, of course, doesn’t get it–and kingdoms fear chaos in the presence of weakened authority.

For any new to BackChannels or curious about reacquaintance, “FTAC” generally refers to Facebook and the prompting conversations I have had on that platform. Basically, FB arguments and questions have prompted quite a bit of thought on my part. Over time, ideas and insights have become firm and stable (and I won’t back down, so goes the song).

Regarding Avi Melamed, we have had a Facebook acquaintance dating back to 2012 with a faltering correspondence — my fault too — petering out around the middle of October 2015. So much for “social media”. For all the humans, lol, there really is just one of each of us, and with Time having become the new Space, many with lives online — Entertainment! News! Shopping! Zoom! — have fully booked the Dimension.

AI Brief, America v. Iran, conflict analysis, diplomacy, Strait of Hormuz

Prompt: In relation to hostilities involving regional American assets associated with the Strait of Hormuz, please brief me on Iranian attacks–up to a dozen (if there have been that many_–in declining order of significance.

AI: The fragile truce established under the June 17, 2026 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has fractured into a highly volatile cycle of kinetic escalation. Tehran is aggressively attempting to leverage its geographic position to assert total hegemonic control over the Strait of Hormuz—de facto shifting from a sovereign coastal gatekeeper to an armed protection racket by demanding transit fees and dictating mandatory shipping lanes.

The following is a structured evaluation of the recent core Iranian actions against regional American assets and commercial infrastructure in the Strait of Hormuz, ranked in declining order of tactical, strategic, and regional significance.

1. Mass Retaliatory Ballistic Missile Salvo Against U.S. Forward Bases (July 11–12, 2026)

 • Target Infrastructure: U.S. Military Installations across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region—specifically Prince Hassan Air Base (Jordan), and assets in Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman.
 • Tactical Execution: Massive multi-axis strike utilizing precision-guided ballistic missiles and long-range attack drones launched directly by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and conventional armed forces.
 • Operational & Cultural Impact: This represents the highest escalation rung. The strike on Jordan’s Prince Hassan Air Base directly destroyed the facility’s command-and-control center and MQ-9 Reaper drone hangars. By striking Qatar (which has acted as a primary diplomatic mediator) and Oman, Iran is linguistically and kinetically signaling that “neutrality” is no longer recognized. It forces regional host nations into the crossfire of the broader U.S.-Iran conflict.

2. Kinetic Strike and Destruction of the M/V GFS Galaxy (July 11, 2026)

 • Target Infrastructure: UAE-owned, Cyprus-flagged container vessel M/V GFS Galaxy (IMO: 9401271).
 • Tactical Execution: Anti-ship projectile strike executed 9 nautical miles east of Oman, targeted deliberately at the vessel’s stern.
 • Operational & Cultural Impact: The attack caused devastating fires and extensive engine room destruction, forcing the civilian crew to abandon ship. This is the most destructive single commercial asset hit since the February-to-May war window. It triggered a massive U.S. counter-response (the third and fourth waves of intense CENTCOM airstrikes, hitting roughly 140 Iranian military targets). It demonstrated Tehran’s absolute willingness to enforce its self-declared “indefinite closure” of the Strait through total ship destruction.

3. Drone Attack on the Qatari LNG Carrier Al Rekayyat (July 6, 2026)

 • Target Infrastructure: Qatari-flagged Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier Al Rekayyat (IMO: 9397339).
 • Tactical Execution: Loitering munition (suicide drone) precision strike hitting the top port side near the engine room as the ship traveled south near Limah, Oman.
 • Operational & Cultural Impact: This attack holds profound geopolitical weight because it marks the first time a Qatari asset has been directly targeted. Qatar’s role as the indispensable diplomatic backchannel between Washington and Tehran was structurally violated by this strike. The attack signaled that Tehran values immediate tactical dominion over the waterway above the preservation of its primary diplomatic conduit, sparking severe diplomatic protests from Doha.

4. Coordinated Strike on the Saudi Crude Tanker Wedyan (July 6, 2026)

 • Target Infrastructure: Saudi Arabia-flagged crude tanker Wedyan (IMO: 9524970).
 • Tactical Execution: Coordinated drone/projectile strike executed within hours of the Al Rekayyat hit.
 • Operational & Cultural Impact: Directly striking a high-value Saudi energy asset tests the limits of regional security and threatens global energy supply continuity. This action forced Riyadh to hold Tehran fully liable for regional navigation disruptions, undermining regional detente and freezing normalization discussions.

5. Interception and Kinetic Targeting of the Cyprus Prosperity (July 7, 2026)

 • Target Infrastructure: Liberia-flagged commercial vessel Cyprus Prosperity (IMO: 9595216).
 • Tactical Execution: Multi-boat harassment swarm followed by a projectile strike to halt the vessel.
 • Operational & Cultural Impact: Part of the initial “triple-play” wave on July 6–7 that shattered the post-war calm. It proved that Iran was running an organized campaign to systematically target any vessel deviating from its unauthorized, unilaterally imposed shipping lanes.

6. The Forced Halting and Seizure of Multi-National Merchant Ships (July 11, 2026)

 • Target Infrastructure: Two unnamed commercial vessels transiting the international corridor.
 • Tactical Execution: IRGC Navy small-boat swarms fired direct “warning shots,” boarded, and forcefully brought the ships to a halt under the guise of the newly formed Persian Gulf Strait Authority.
 • Operational & Cultural Impact: Semantically, Iran framed this as routine maritime law enforcement against “offending vessels that switched off onboard systems.” In reality, it acts as a enforcement mechanism for their protection racket—using kinetic coercion to compel global shipping companies to submit transit requests to Tehran and pay transit tariffs.

7. IRGC Naval Swarming and Electronic Warfare Harassment of U.S. Surface Vessels (Ongoing, July 2026)

 • Target Infrastructure: U.S. Central Command / U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet surface assets patrolling the southern shipping highway.
 • Tactical Execution: Aggressive maneuvers by IRGC fast-attack craft (FAC) backed by localized GPS jamming and electronic spoofing along the Omani coast.
 • Operational & Cultural Impact: While lower on the scale of direct structural destruction, these asymmetric provocations are designed to test U.S. rules of engagement (ROE). Iran uses these encounters for internal propaganda, attempting to project local maritime supremacy and signal to domestic audiences that the “era of one-sided deals is over,” as stated by Iranian negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

Analysis

From a cultural and deep intelligence standpoint, the current Iranian offensive demonstrates a highly calculated linguistic and operational pivot. Tehran is redefining the concept of “sovereignty” over international waters. By standing up the Persian Gulf Strait Authority in May and attempting to enforce mandatory tolls, the regime is trying to normalize its dominion over a global chokepoint.

The attacks are intentionally designed to exploit the physical geography of the Omani coastline. While Oman attempts to offer a expanded “southern highway” corridor to keep traffic safe from Iranian shores, Iran is actively using kinetic strikes within Oman’s maritime vicinity to show that no alternative route exists without their explicit, paid permission. This effectively traps regional commerce in a paradigm where they must either risk catastrophic hull loss or succumb to Iranian extortion.

I don’t do “Hasbara”, i.e., Jewish or Israeli public relations.

I’m not interested in promoting American “Yankee Doodle” flapjack about the genius of the American Enterprise in Democracy, especially when that “democracy has served up a foreign infection for its head of state (related: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2022/07/19/detecting-post-soviet-russias-black-narrative-of-revenge-for-89-and-91/; https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/oct/29/czechoslovakia-spied-on-trump-to-exploit-ties-to-highest-echelons-of-us-power; https://conflict-backchannels.com/2024/11/08/well-have-it-fixed-so-good-said-donald-trump/; https://conflict-backchannels.com/2025/02/18/trump-piracy-board-disarm-and-plunder-the-united-states-of-america/; https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/usa-trump-property–find the same on X through the hash tag #RussiaRussiaRussia).

My interest: American modern culture and related art and humanism–and expressive of it, my own American neighborhood.

With Donald Trump in power, American may share the feeling of being marched forward into a past characterized by the power of feudal-medieval mafia to (in retrospect, inevitably) destroy themselves.

How many Americans — how many American neighbors — sunk in hunger or pain will quietly dissolve before power into a living death–or death–without a fight for their right to the dignity of their existence beneath the security umbrella of a nation that has their back?

On my desktop earlier today: https://www.kyleorton.com/p/nyt-media-coverage-israel-hamas-gaza.

Moscow and its manipulation Palestinian “leaders” have lied to Palestinians for decades as regards their Jewish neighbors. Kyle Orton’s astute observation of plain factual “pro-Palestinian” errors may provide the fuel for a right revolutionary fire against . . . lies, for both Israelis and Palestinians might benefit from the kind of truth that may be questioned, explored with integrity, and affirmed, corrected, or trashed.

The study finds that the Times admitted seventy-two errors in its coverage of the war, forty-eight of them (fully two-thirds) directly against Israel. It is a point that authors do not stress, but should have: there is not a single case of false Times reporting that negatively affected the image of HAMAS. If incompetence was all that was going on here, the “mistakes” would not all be in the same direction. As telling on this point, the “errors were identified by external sources” and when corrections were issued they were often “late, vague, and sometimes evasive”.

Orton goes on to cover bias, deceptions, and misrepresentations in The New York Times‘ reporting on the Israeli-Hamas war.

For denizens of the American Far Left (or Far Right) one would think carelessness with information would be resented–the same informs the equivalent of lies with intent to manipulate popular perception while massaging along the way egos with malign narcissistic, partisan, and ultimately only selfish ends. They are those who worry about how they may look rather than how things are and what might bring improvements in security and in the enjoyment of life.

So why play along with falsehoods?

Palestinians have been basically bullshitted into slavery (as well as certain suicide-by-war and death) by their own (related on this blog: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2021/07/26/ftac-palestinian-kgb-the-palestinians-abused-and-plundered-by-their-own/).

*

Criminals, including political ones, advance their interests through coercion (blackmail, bribery, intimidation, and patronage), fraud (misrepresentations), and force (violence). Any in and of the modern west may only wonder how some in and near Gaza may feel about being bullied, essentially, into a compliant posture toward retrograde and vicious power.

Above: Palestinians kill one another during the 2007 “Battle for Gaza“.

The interests of modern societies are not in power but in area-wide qualities of living of concern to the health of environments and of species supported, much including our own. For assorted cavemen, cowards, and criminals, coercive power, corruption, and wealth appear all that matter.

In a recent Tweet, the high and not so mighty Dmitry Medvedev, chair of the Security Council of Russia, referred to Ukrainian President Zelensky as a “provincial clown”. After so many years of accumulating material about Russia, I had quite a bit to pack into one riposte–>

An ignorant medieval mob may be whipped to riot, but in #Gaza there must be some cooler, more educated, reasoning, and…

— J. S. Oppenheim (@JS_Oppenheim) October 18, 2023

First things first: Israeli Precision Guided Rockets neither miss their their targets nor fail to destroy them in their entirety.

The explosion that took place did so in a parking lot, and it produced no cratering nor damage to nearby buildings.

Next: Arabs may lie to save face and sustain pride in allegedly blameless fashion.

I would ascribe such behavior to primitive, medieval, and tribal mentality and would do so across cultures inclined to both humiliate and spoil their boys as humiliation motivates the development of the malignant narcissist.

The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) analysis has included review of Israeli military launch records; radar air activity tracking records; reverse-tracked rocket fire traced to the proximity of the hospital, i.e., rocket trajectory show the launch took place south of the hospital–and not far from it; and independent video of the actual failure of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s rocket.

In intercepted audio communications, launch controller-tracker officers note the location of launch as a cemetery behind the hospital . . . . So there’s the location south of the hospital–a cemetery!–and both cause and opportunity to lie about the attempt.

Regarding the matter of Hamas having lied to Palestinians to cover the shame attending a failed rocket launch (while blaming it on the other guy), the ways have always been several: cover, deflect, deny, erase, fabricate, frame, and omit.

Epigram

Hillel the Elder

"That which is distasteful to thee do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and study."

"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? If not now, when?"

"Whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world."

Oriana Fallaci
"Whether it comes from a despotic sovereign or an elected president, from a murderous general or a beloved leader, I see power as an inhuman and hateful phenomenon...I have always looked on disobedience toward the oppressive as the only way to use the miracle of having been born."

Talmud 7:16 as Quoted by Rishon Rishon in 2004
Qohelet Raba, 7:16

אכזרי סוף שנעשה אכזרי במקום רחמן

Kol mi shena`asa rahaman bimqom akhzari Sof shena`asa akhzari bimqom rahaman

All who are made to be compassionate in the place of the cruel In the end are made to be cruel in the place of the compassionate.

More colloquially translated: "Those who are kind to the cruel, in the end will be cruel to the kind."

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

Positively Orwellian: Comment Responding to Claim that the Arab Assault on Israel in 1948 Had Not Intended Annihilation

“Revisionism” is the most contemptible path that power takes to abet theft and hide shame by attempting to alter public perception of past events.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
