“It is ridiculous that Israel opens Jerusalem for foreign tourists, while millions of Palestinian Christians and Muslims are being banned from entering their occupied capital,” said Nabil Shaath, a confidant of the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas.” —  We humans do ourselves in with our mouths, and our mouths do in others through their ears.  When hate is the cause, the cause is poison, the body politic, should it care to care for itself, takes appropriate measures.

In March 2014, ICHR monitored 22 deaths, 15 of which took place in the Gaza Strip and the remainder in the West Bank. The causes of death were distributed as follows:

(1) death in a detention center (Gaza Strip);
(3)deaths under mysterious circumstances (1/West Bank; 2 cases of women/Gaza Strip);
(7) deaths due to negligence of public safety precautions (4/Gaza Strip; 3/ West Bank);
(3) deaths due to family disputes (West Bank);
(7) deaths due to misuse of firearms and internal explosions;
(1) death due to a tunnel incident (Gaza Strip).

The report also lists cases of torture and mistreatment in PA and Hamas prisons. ICHR pointed to an increase in the number of torture cases in prisons belonging to the PA’s much-feared Preventive Security Service in the West Bank.

During January, ICHR wrote that it received 56 complaints about torture and mistreatment in Palestinian prisons: 36 in the Gaza Strip and 19 in the West Bank. In addition, the human rights organization received innumerable complaints about arbitrary and unlawful arrests of Palestinians by the PA and Hamas.

The “Middle East Conflict (MEC)” — it’s never about Syria, for example, is it? — has been both a real and potential vortex for me since co-moderating an “Israel-Palestine Peace Group” (the initial creator and moderator of the forum turned out a lawyer contracting in the territories and positioned opposite the Jewish State — “Zionist Entity”, “Jewish-majority state”, “Little Satan”, yawn, etc.). hosted on a Georgetown University computer serving an “International Peace and Collaborative Development Network” community.  Now defunct, so both co-moderators may hope, that endeavor bogged down, as do so many of what I call “hate peace peace groups” on Facebook, in deeply bigoted banter.

For the most part, I leave the MEC’s online “intellectual battlespace” to others for scrapping, but it finds me now and then as it did this morning while chatyping with a correspondent about the two-state solution and the impossibility of creating that reality given an 1) Arab bloc that refuses to accept the possibility of a “Jewish State”, 2) the architecture and economy of two governments and multiple entities that derive both substantial income and power from keeping the conflict sustained — no matter what the cost to the refugee generations from 1948 — and 3) the continuing threat of violence against politicos (like Mudar Zahran) positioned as realistic peacemakers but essentially meddling and muddling from exile.

Add the match: Arab Islamic supremacist thought undergirding Arab anti-Semitism in service to Islamic supersession.

Related and recent on that last note: Cohen, Richard.  “Hamas must repudiate the anti-Semitism in its charter.”  Op-Ed.  The Washington Post, April 28, 2014:  “And yet in a corner of the world, the Holocaust is considered no mystery at all. The Jews did it to themselves to foster the creation of Israel. This is what Hamas believes”.

Bowen, Jeremy.  “Have MidEast talks failure killed two-state goal?”  BBC Middle East, April 29, 2014.  “Both sides say they want peace, and there is no reason to doubt them.”  Yes, Mr. Bowen, there is.  Judaism and Israel stall Islamism and Hamas; democracy and Israel stand against pan-Arab nationalist ambition and further dictatorship.  Which is the anachronism: democracy, Judaism, Israel?  Autocracy, Islam, blood-and-soil nationalism, Fatah and Hamas?

Once exposed, his weakness precipitated mounting pressures to give way again and again. And each time he did, rather than receiving any commendation for his “moderation,” all Netanyahu got was continuing condemnation for not complying with the next emerging demand.

Thus, barely five months after the Bar-Ilan fiasco, he capitulated once again.

Since Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, terrorists have fired more than 8,000 rockets into Israel. Over 3.5 million Israelis are currently living under threat of rocket attacks.

More than half a million Israelis have less than 60 seconds to find shelter after a rocket is launched from Gaza into Israel. Most rockets launched from Gaza into Israel are capable of reaching Israel’s biggest southern cities.

Rocket Attacks on Israel From Gaza • IDF Blog | The Official Blog of the Israel Defense Forces

Related: List of Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel, 2014 – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

* * *

Israel’s military said more than 20 rockets were fired. Israeli media reported more than 50 rockets were fired.

The Iranian-backed Islamic Jihad has killed dozens of Israelis in suicide bombings and other attacks over the years. Israel’s military said they had targeted the militants on Tuesday after they fired at Israel.

Gaza militants fire large barrage of at least 20 rockets into Israel; no casualties reported

______

If the weapons stored in Gaza allow it, this can only escalate unless or until the IDF steps in with boots to stop it.

The news also tells the effect of having intercepted a major arms shipment last week: is the one shipment caught, however substantial it may be, the only shipment that needed to be caught?

The numbers seem to be going up.  The news broke with the term “barrage” used, then noted “more than 20”, and recently AFP reported “over 50” and this latest link — BREAKING: Palestinians Fire at Least 60 Rockets At Southern Israel – The Tower – The Tower – reports “at least 60”.

The saddest statement for reading from the above:

A top Hamas official publicly boasted this week that the Iran-backed terror group intends to blanket Israel with missiles and rockets during any future conflagration. Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon had warned as far back as last fall that Hamas was arming itself in anticipation of “a renewal of violence,” an assessment that came amid increasingly specific intelligence indicating that the organization was looking to provoke a conflict with Israel in order to reverse what had become a precipitous decline in its domestic and international positions.

Competing to hate, to express more hate than someone else’s hate, to do more with hate and thereby garner “prestige” . . . .

What’s garnered universally by such a philosophy: contempt.

FTAC – The Middle East Conflict Will Drive Me Mad

Israel isn’t doing anything TO the Palestinians but trying to help them with economic development (Israel is an employer and trading partner), education (Israel’s universities accept Palestinians), health care (the system frequently steps in to provide services unavailable in Palestinian hospitals), legal assistance and advocacy — amazingly, Israelis are more free to advocate on behalf of the refugees than are the refugees under the the watch of Fatah and Hamas.

Check out Israel’s own far left.

The thematic “get the Jews” / “get Israel” is a part of language behavior and not corresponding with any political reality — it’s a reality in the head, rule based, and perception fixing. Some part flows down from Soviet cant about “American imperialist ambitions” and some about Muhammad’s statements promoting the superiority (by divine edict) of Islam along with the division and subjugation (to dhimmi) of Jews and Christians, as bogus a play as Soviet imperialist ambitions in Afghanistan.

Israel (and the Jews) keep getting in the way of barbarians, dictators, and fanatics.

The truth is the refugees of 1948 wouldn’t be so had the Arabs accepted Palestinian statehood at the time, but the thought of a Jewish state ( on purchased land sparsely populated) would seem to have been perceived as an affront to Islamic ambition, and there proceeded from that three wars (or more) of annihilation against the “Zionist entity”, which won each, claimed territory, enfranchised its immediate Arab Christian and Muslim population, and struggled on to maintain the possibility of a Palestinian state responsibly governed. For its troubles, which includes the evacuation of Jews from Gaza in a “Land for Peace” deal, it primarily provided Hamas and Company a rocket base (8,000 received before “Cast Lead”).

Islam’s best demonstration project today is burning itself up in Syria between fighting a brutal dictatorship, a cause with which only Putin and the Ayatollah would disagree — and possibly only for so long as fewer than 7 percent of his constituency can get around RT and read English freely — and fighting one another, and that to the extent that al-Qaeda as an organization seems to have repudiated ISIL as an affiliate — and there’s more nonsense and betrayal going on back there with money and arms today.

Anti-Semitism founded in the glorious dream of magical Islamic secession just doesn’t work, and governance in Islam — Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Algeria (has had problems this past year as well) is a mess.

In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood discovered intolerance toward itself inside of a single year’s foray into power.

Should Egyptians be or feel trapped between authoritarian personalities and systems?

Of course not.

Nor should Syrians, who in essence have no army defending their reasonable interests — rather Syria’s malignant narcissists (different talk, same walk on both sides) continue taking the country down brick by brick, and whether by barrel bomb or truck bomb hardly matters.

Perhaps I should think about it before hitting the WordPress “Publish” button.

Okay — a few additional comments . . . .

Egyptians with modern businesses, interests, and investments needs must have a security system guarantying their freedom to sustain their efforts in relation to them.

Syrians perhaps need an army that is not all about itself and its immediate lines of affiliation and alliance, but rather about the interests of the constituents of the land.

A great religion or a strong one affords hope, faith, and solace inclusively, not exclusively.  The continuous perception of division — and take that further: trivial division! — drives the Islamic Small Wars.

The want of exclusive favor may do that.

Some items on the web are ever-new or evergreen, and many of them play at this time of the year; however, “West Bank Story” may be one that plays beside the regret that things could be and could have been different eight years ago and should be and by now should have been different today.

The film’s official web site provides back-story; that I found the link earlier this day on Facebook tells how our communications environment has changed since 2005: the clip was new at first encounter, a little disappointing for having been posted in November of 2012, and now illuminating to find it traces back to 2005.

The world that does not know what to do with its hate — or understand why it has that wired into its social grammar in selective parts — may find “West Bank Story” again relevant at this time next year.  Everyone else, however, may wish it God’s speed into irrelevance and transformation into a charming artifact left to grace the lid of the dust bin of history to which the middle east conflict and much else may one day be consigned.

Hillel the Elder

"That which is distasteful to thee do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and study."

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

Positively Orwellian: Comment Responding to Claim that the Arab Assault on Israel in 1948 Had Not Intended Annihilation

“Revisionism” is the most contemptible path that power takes to abet theft and hide shame by attempting to alter public perception of past events.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
