Link — Politically Correct Misrepresentation — Mainstream Media and Zaytuna College

A Religion News Service article reprinted in the Washington Post and elsewhere, including the Christian Century, described Zaytuna as “A college that requires the study of both Wordsworth and the Quran for graduation… now the first fully accredited Islamic university in America.”

Yet WASC approved only one program: a B.A. in Islamic law and theology.

If the screenshot banner copy is unclear or too small to read, it says, “‘Killing Jews is Worship that draws us close to Allah’ — Hamas MTV.  That’s His Jihad, What’s yours?”

 Comment From The Awesome Conversation

The Geller and Spencer and other anti-Jihad shows ask of Islam sufficient introspection and courage emphasize virtue, reform if necessary, and put both the 20th Century inspiration for the “Muslim Botherhood” and related poison-in-the-head out of business so that more of the world can get to work on other things.

However, the conflict and violence that assaults us daily by way of global media — and investment in this region of discussion — hasn’t only to do with Islam: it has to do with the interpretation of power — absolute and feudal or distributed and democratic. “Putin-Assad-Khamenei” are of a type, and Islam, especially in the middle east, has been “played” (ref.: Pacepa and Rychlak) and plays to their deeply medieval world vision and the image they have of themselves in it.

The Jews continuously, famously, remove themselves from cults of godlike personality and continue eternally in search of the Promised Land. Instead of imposing, the commune invites, and perhaps after Hillel, some ideas about a common humanity become borrowable but also political and little bit crooked (in Judaism, for example, all of the prophets are drawn as faulted humans, deeply so, and kept separate from God). For our grandiose delusional dictators fascists malignant narcissists, the limitation perhaps seems a deep affront and “control”, sadistic and total, becomes their thing. Must we have them? “Syndicate Red Brown Green” and NATO, more or less, are wrestling over it. Hamas is way down on the food chain (thank Khamenei, among others, for keeping it in business) but it’s leveraging some Islamic zeitgeist to produce chaos, fear, and sorrow around itself serves the larger press of the feudal mode.

Not only “the awesome conversation” elicits the above but also simply visiting these themes — conflict, culture, language, psychology — day after week after month after years: things come to the surface.  Some become so familiar as to become blog-based tropes:

No Moses — no Muhammad

Hillel the Elder –> Jesus, Paul, Constantine –> Muhammad

The Torah begins with God

The Torah, closely read, compels progressive ethical and moral argument

Syndicate Red Brown Green (post-Soviet neo-feudal Russia; new national socialists; Islamists)

Expect some items to show up on the “Alpha – Zulu” page of this blog.  Others may be simply plugged into meditative political writing as fit.

The tests of will in conflict that BackChannels has come to perceive has been very much within the medieval vs modern template, which would be fine if the medieval proved good.  The matter, however, has been complicated by a dark portion in psychology, i.e., the compulsive, endless, and helpless fascism and sadism of the malignant narcissist.  Too often, capricious power — power considering itself above all natural laws and inclined to create and make the same to suit itself without limits — comes to impose suffering on others with impunity.  It (!) appears to prize the annihilation of others and the erasing of time out of the urge to exist in a timeless world entirely of its own fashioning — and doing so it dooms itself to annihilation.

Alongside the honor brigade’s official channel, a community of self-styled blasphemy police — from anonymous blogs such as LoonWatch.com and Ikhras.com to a large and disparate cast of social-media activists — arose and began trying to control the debate on Islam. This wider corps throws the label of “Islamophobe” on pundits, journalists and others who dare to talk about extremist ideology in the religion. Their targets are as large as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and as small as me.

Nomani, Asra.  “Meet the honor brigade, an organized campaign to silence debate on Islam.”  The Washington Post, January 16, 2015.

The above article was mentioned by Ayaan Hirsi Ali in a video featured on another BackChannels post.

The more action taken against the classically liberal world, the more the medieval machinations grinding away at it and Islam’s future become clear.  Lightly linked here “malignant narcissism” within the realm of political psychology, the roots of intellectual stuckness, the propensity for deeply authoritarian and sadistic leadership, become increasingly clear.

As noted on that other post, the discussion of reformation in Islam has been taken up in an earnest fashion by New Age Islam and, of course, there is now no end to criticism from every direction, including from deep within Islam, of an Ummah beset with bloody conflicts and terrorist incidents from Afghanistan to Yemen.

It’s not just the vice-chancellor of Jamia Azhar but others too that are now calling for reformation in Islam, something that was being done so far in a consistent and methodical manner only on Islamic website New Age Islam. Indeed, New Age Islam remains banned for the last two years in Pakistan for countering the Jihadist theology of violence being propagated on over 150 Jihadi publications in that country.

Thus it is gratifying that several other Muslims from different parts of the world are now coming out to demand introspection and change. Four well-known Muslim intellectuals, for instance, have appealed to all Muslim political and religious leaders to stand up and support what they term “democratic Islam.” They have called for a conference in France early next year that would “define the contours of a progressive interpretation of Islam firmly grounded in the 21st century.”

Shahin, Sultan.  “Facing The Jihadist Challenge: Muslims Need To Refute Jihadis’ Xenophobic, Supremacist, Millenarian Thesis And Focus On Islamic Pluralism, Says Sultan Shahin At UNHRC In Geneva: Oral Statement at United Nations Human Rights Council, Geneva, 27th regular session 2-27 March 2015.” New Age Islam, March 13, 2015.

In Judaism, God’s three gifts to His first two children are human consciousness, self-consciousness, and conscience.

The ethnic development of the technology may in some ways undermine the implicit and appealing universalism in the message, but in schema, this amounts only to urging the separation of the authors of ideas inherently dignifying and liberating from contemplation of those ideas as they stand on their own.

One or two cousinly additional thoughts for the reform minded: all figures depicted by the Torah and referred to as “prophets” by Islam have in the Torah been drawn as faulted people and distanced from God — in essence, disconflated, Moses included (God parts the waters, not him); the Torah also compels ethical and legal argument without end, for when God “proves Abraham” — tests him — the test is not defined, and whether of obedience or conscience (perhaps Abraham had been expected to speak his mind about the sacrifice of Isaac, i.e., to have been conscionable, not blindly obedient) is left to the listeners and readers to argue.

FTAC – Uptake . . . Uplift

No government can restrict itself to timing stoplights.

Each government — each unified state — promotes an ethics, spirit, and values embraced culture-wide — or it is not unified.

The west: Greco-Roman in spirit, Judeo-Christian in the derivations of common law.

With exception (like Leviticus), the Torah tells much less than it invites or induces in lively ethical and moral argument. Some results of the great conversation with the universe stand up to time — and some don’t.

Is Abraham to be emulated for his instant obedience to God, or should he be chastised for not having had the courage to speak his conscience before God when tested?

That’s a Jewish argument if ever laid out for generations.

The aesthetic and moral evolution of the Jews, as with all tribes, comprises an ethnic part, but the universalism exceeds the same and borrowed into Christianity and Islam (start with jurist Hillel the Elder, who dies around 10-CE after updating Judaism in its legal aspect and making it more accessible to converts) may after 2,000 years and much spilled blood brought us to something new: a fresh start for everyone from an old base.

Israel won’t go backward to rote obedience to anything: we are always leaving Pharaoh and crossing rivers and going to the Promised Land with a mixed multitude. The labels give us fits — and that is something to address — but the general and more kind contours of our humanity may be something to build and prize together.

With fewer than 7,000 living languages extant in the world — and many disappearing annually –the first sound basis for peace may be judicious ethnolinguistic separation and some recognition of related distribution cores and margins across space.  To obtain that within a compressed socially integrating information system, one might want the guidance of a few helpful principles and virtues (perhaps like those listed in the upper left part of the sidebar of this blog).

Stimulus for the comment:

Yashar, Ari.  “Report: Netanyahu Promises Talmud Will Be Israeli Law.”  Arutz Sheva, May 9, 2014.

“Secular” refers to many principles of fairness, but it does not mean merely “clinical” or “practical” or somehow “disembodied” and divorced from all that informs cultural self-concept.

The Jews caught a good break and bad one in their struggle with adverse and evil relationships and their striving for a different kind of culture, one diminishing the power of tyrants while being also kind and fair and just not only to its own throughout but to others as well.

Many interpretations have been offered as regards the inclusion in Exodus of “a mixed multitude” — but all agree on its inclusion and presence in the flight of the Jews from Pharaoh and out into the wilderness leading to the river leading to the Land.

The killers of Islamic State and Nigeria’s Boko Haram cite the same religious texts that every other Muslim in the world considers sacrosanct.

Instead of letting Islam off the hook with bland cliches about the religion of peace, we in the West need to challenge and debate the very substance of Islamic thought and practice.

FTAC – MEC – From KGB to PLO – From Hitler to Hamas

MEC, middle east conflict

The war I see is “red brown green” vs “blue” / the despotic vs the democratic / the permitted deceitful vs the honest to a fault. There isn’t anything else to this 20th Century extension of Hitler’s Germany and the Soviet Era. In Moscow, first thing last November, Mikhail Bogdanov met with representatives of the PFLP (this was before the synagogue attack): how is that still taking place today? How is that Hamas (with its leader-billionaires) and the PLO (or has “Abu Mazen” transformed somehow) remain in business when they actually bring so little and do so little for their people (apart from keeping them bent, corralled, and controlled)? The MEC has been about the power of a very few, not about real estate — for the regard given the refugees by warring Arab would-be protectors, visit the Yarmouk Camp story in Syria — and until that’s address — until those who manipulate this inhuman show business are address — it just goes on.

______

One’s themes may continue until they are written out and one has returned to them day after day.

______

I think there is one state, the Land of the Hebrews — an ethnolinguistic concept — with two inholdings, Gaza and Ramallah. Those represent two distinct outposts in what is or has become essentially a fascist challenge to the “Greco-Roman Judeo-Christian west”: one draws its impulsion from the Soviet Union and it’s KGB’s program to promote anti-Semitism in the middle east to leverage power for Moscow (this is not so old history even though it is history); the other in Gaza signals colonization along an Islamist front, and for the many sources of support, the essential tandem appears to me to be Moscow-Tehran, i.e., Putin-Khamenei (The People — any! — count much, much less in the politics than the psychology of the leadership).

In the earliest days of November, Moscow (Mikhail Bogdanov) met with representatives of the PFLP (this took place before the synagogue attack, and, perhaps weirdly, they talked about S-20 missiles, a pretty good indicators of many things: the Soviet dissolved in the early 1990s — KGB did not; the PLO and PFLP and others simply did not lose their purchase with Moscow; Putin-Assad-Khamenei (those missiles had to do with Syria) are part of the same engine driving today a “Red Brown Green Alliance”. The Jews, having long ago developed (received) and argued into life an ethical-humanist code (the first attributes the Torah ascribes to humanity — darn that apple and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil — are human consciousness, self-consciousness and conscience (everything needed to deal with the world — and with Pharaoh — are right there at the beginning) keep standing in the way of a kind of person, a tyrant, a “malignant narcissist”.

Religions are universes in themselves, but some personalities always and across the new space that is the plane of time — time as a surface on which things enter into and out of existence (that thought takes a little time for entertaining) — both create or leverage belief for power and wealth: apostasy, heresy, and hypocrisy becomes charges useful for prying away position, property, and life, and as much seems so with the “isms” familiar to fascist eruptions. Not German enough, not communist enough, not genuinely Catholic (Inquisition), not Muslim enough: what a useful rhetorical tool that has been, but for the worst of the worst of mankind. Before the business, political, and religious mafia that avail themselves of such tools, stand the Jews — who get an update from Hillel — and Christians and Muslims who better note their cousinhood. (Back in Exodus, not only Moses and the Jews escape Pharaoh, but a “mixed multitude” — these details are argued to death, but room is there to believe the Jews not exclusive but instead inclusive, and then, indeed, it’s the dictators, the tyrants, who believe themselves exclusive and go on to intellectually poison their populations to the extent that they can do it.

That’s been “my middle east conflict” for a while now, and it took some time, news watching and other reading, to shift the focus from wars between political interests and states to wars that are more about the character and psychology of leadership and the nature of fascism.

______

More From the Awesome Conversation:

From Stalin-Hitler –> PLO-Hamas, roughly, should by now be clear but perhaps not clear in the information-controlled cultures or regions of interest. Those same, however, have large diaspora, and if the diaspora comprehends what powerful political agents have done to them — and can summon the courage to own up to having been made the targets of that manipulation — then Gaza City and Ramallah will “get it” too. I continue to recommend Pacepa and Rychlak’s book _Disinformation_ for a good look at how the KGB worked.

The true conflict — cleared of legal and rhetorical clutter — has come to seem to me to be about democracy and classical liberalism vs feudal despotism. It’s not the land that’s being contested: but two principles in the social organization of humans.

2/12/2015

Stimulus for the response:

http://blogs.timesofisrael.com/we-palestinians-hold-the-key-to-a-better-future/ by Bassem Eid – 12/12/2015.

2/13/2014:

It appears (to me) the launch of both Christianity and Islam involved “borrowing” from the Jewish story and mythos while also distancing from it as an update (Christianity) or reversion (Islam). However, the historical politics writ large appear (to me) to have been both obvious in large frame but obscured to the populations involved, and perhaps not without understandable causes:

1. The Hebrews must have comprised then a more confined ethnolinguistic cohort, one in fact decimated by the Roman Army (Titus burned Jerusalem in 70 AD, killing, it has been estimated, between 250,000 and 400,000 Jews and enslaving untold numbers, many to be managed in Egypt). The Roman culture that produced that unfortunately not singular act of horror were destined to become Jews themselves and Christians in their overwhelming majority. At the base and in the period around the birth of Christ, Hillel the Elder (35-BC to 10-CE) may have been a crossover figure, much overlooked outside of Jewish circles but credited with making the study of Judaism more accessible to the “gentile” and therefore less insular. (You know the quotation spoken to a hesitant convert while Hillel stood on one leg): “That which is distasteful to thee do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. All of the rest is commentary. Now go and study”). Roman-Christian distancing from the Jews while embracing as basic to Catholicism the “First Testament” would develop the feudal animosity and levers — demonizations, blood libels, accusations of apostasy and heresy — that would form the fascist successionary anti-Semitism of the Church or, perhaps more accurately, those it empowered for centuries to come. The Catholic Church – Rome – backed off on its charge of “Deicide” only in 1964; the Lutheran Synod in the United States waited until, I believe, the 1980s to make a similar course correction.

As Hillel the Elder had stated, whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world.”[6] — copied from Wikipedia. Again, Hillel’s estimated period of presence in history: 35-BC to 10-CE. Muhammad’s echo follows hundreds of years later. The Legend of the Banu Qurayza (which legend Tarek Fatah dismisses out of hand although it appears prevalent in the literature) couches a military surrender to power and subsequent slaughter (mass beheading, 800 males down to the boy with but one pubic hair . . . .) in self-righteous terms, a political process much witnessed today in the rhetoric and acts of “the Islamists”.

Oh good grief.

The Jews again proved resistant to acknowledging the presence of a prophet, all of the Jewish ones — from Moses himself and forward — proving inescapably human and flawed in the very first of their descriptions. Moses, for example, may give the human signal for advancing into the Red Sea, but God drives the winds (and the pillar of cloud) that parts the waters. It could be early science fiction, I would grant, but there’s more of humanity going on in every “bible story”, starting with Moses leaving Egypt with not only the Jews but a “mixed multitude”, and while some scholars may have used the “mixed multitude” as a mistake that would destroy “the pure” (how that echoes around the world!), I don’t see that interpretation embedded in the English translations: what I read is the inclusion of others wishing to flee a tyrant.

Now our armies — despotic (Putin!) — or democratic (Obama!) are nuclear tipped machines capable of producing massive death and destruction, and we’re carting around this intellectual load in language that needs a holy edit or unholy but wise observation (yay) that leaves the Hebrews alone and brings everyone else (who wants to come along) onto the same plain — there’s that river running through time, and we are still on its near side.

I appear to be making this post a running commentary From the Awesome Conversion (FTAC) on conflict and religion and where I / we are as a divided (despotic vs democratic) and triangulated (Jewish, Christian, Muslim) global enterprise.

FTAC – On Monotheist Assembly

30 Friday Jan 2015

“We can proceed from the assumption that Judaism and Islam, while certainly differing in a number of fundamental perspectives and priorities — are, as religious communities, not in conflict.” In the main part, Christians, Jews, and Muslims and others are not naturally in conflict. There’s no cause but what may be amplified — or provoked! – in content of imagination and mind. However, legal, social, and political histories evolving after Hillel the Elder, a jurist who may have laid the foundation for a universalized access to Judaism, belie the assumption. Denial is sweet, but like sugar poured on a wound, may add to injury, and all have been injured on the monotheist merry-go-round that follows from Hillel’s outlook and the adaptation of Judaism to restive populations.

The Jews, not to separate myself too much, are a deeply rooted ethnolinguistic people, indigenous and inherent or joined, brought together beneath the umbrella of a common outlook about humanity. That it works may be born out by what has followed, and now we’re here and perhaps again — all sharing a common basis in faith: God — restive.

I don’t wish to drown in theology — it’s too soon — but may suggest being careful about assumptions that have deeply illiberal — enslaving — political consequences. What is here today is “back there” already. Looking forward may be part of a good assembling.

The source for the bounce:

Berman, Howard A.  “Jews and Muslims: A Call for Reconciliation.”  The American Council for Judaism.  Summer 2007.

A conciliatory stance may diminish the want of conflict and contribute to a character in conversation that eventually enables a clarified and frank reappraisal of ideas, instructions, and principles bound in with legacies in faith.  That conversation must and will be had, but whether today is its day is another matter.

And then on, I droned —

Setting aside the problems posed by inherently despotic leaders — they have their hidden stories and the concept of “malignant narcissism” may cover their intellectual disposition and layout — the psychologies of followers and readers differ also. Those are large areas for discussion, but Facebook threads challenge us to distill and compress as much as possible . . . .

Hillel’s statement to a man ambivalent about conversion sets out a standard perhaps implicit either in the Torah or the study of it: “That which is distasteful to thee, do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. All of the rest is commentary. Now go and study.”

Would that would be all there was to it.

Similarly, when Muhammad says, “One scholar is more powerful against the devil than one thousand worshipers,” he too invokes a universal observation, value, and yearning where language and its treasures have flourished.

We’re all fine with that, or should be.

What happens next becomes history where differences become loud.

In the Jewish way, none of the prophets are close to God or treated as if gods. Moses is shy; he’s dependent on Aaron for advice; and when the waters are parted, it’s not Moses who does it. It’s God. When God sets out to “prove” (test) Abraham, we’re not told whether the test is of obedience or conscience, and we are left to note and argue an awful lot of evidence and subsequent story whether or not Abraham “passes” or “fails” this particular — and many of us believe dumb galunk that would sacrificed his own son without asking God a few questions fails by miles. And so it goes with differences in apprehension, conversational style, and the informing of conscience through language.

On the other side of Jewish liberalism and western “classical liberalism” . . . we miss a lot, which for me starts with the language traditions behind “7,000 living languages” (approximate current estimate) and adding in the ecological and social exigencies of living in large numbers elsewhere on the planet. “Illiberal assumptions” may account for social organization and political peace where imposed even if we don’t much like (and shouldn’t).

Talk and time may work miracles, and as we have that time now, let’s together — Christian, Jewish, and Muslim — set aside complaints and foibles and have a good look around as well as into (my fave) “conflict, culture, language, and psychology” — and see if we cannot produce a better world than that in which we find ourselves.

Epigram

Hillel the Elder

"That which is distasteful to thee do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and study."

"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? If not now, when?"

"Whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world."

Oriana Fallaci
"Whether it comes from a despotic sovereign or an elected president, from a murderous general or a beloved leader, I see power as an inhuman and hateful phenomenon...I have always looked on disobedience toward the oppressive as the only way to use the miracle of having been born."

Talmud 7:16 as Quoted by Rishon Rishon in 2004
Qohelet Raba, 7:16

אכזרי סוף שנעשה אכזרי במקום רחמן

Kol mi shena`asa rahaman bimqom akhzari Sof shena`asa akhzari bimqom rahaman

All who are made to be compassionate in the place of the cruel In the end are made to be cruel in the place of the compassionate.

More colloquially translated: "Those who are kind to the cruel, in the end will be cruel to the kind."

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

Positively Orwellian: Comment Responding to Claim that the Arab Assault on Israel in 1948 Had Not Intended Annihilation

“Revisionism” is the most contemptible path that power takes to abet theft and hide shame by attempting to alter public perception of past events.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
