From the blog earlier today: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2014/01/08/fns-nsa-senior-executives-memo-to-obama/ Our empirical and engineering mentalities in government may want to view terrorists as free radicals attaching themselves to distinctly bad ideas, “radical Islam” the most active, and then, probably because there’s a lot of in-house and contractor money in high tech R&D, they want massive computing to filter the humans likely to be the “bombs on two legs” (thanks, I think, to Alex Braverman for first using that term in a piece of fiction. Maybe not. I’m ageing).

The problem is the poison needs examination in concert with what may be known about language, perception, attitude, and behavior, a complex area for study. As far as I’m concerned, mention of, say, the Banu Qurayza or Aafia Sidiqui and quiet listening to how they’re spoken about should suffice for litmus as to who has repudiated facets of Islam, in behavior, even if not articulated specifically (e.g., as regards the validity of Surah 9:29, for example) and who really believe in the eventual imposition of dhimmi status and taxes and the conversion or slaughter of infidels.

What the American government wants is in part the universalism known to Jewry: if an idea about mankind is to work in theory, to be validated and integrated with knowledge, it has to work universally. Is there a relationship between marathon bombers and abortion clinic bombers — and the Unibomber or, perhaps, Charles Manson? I think there is and have placed “malignant narcissism”, a characteristic in personality, at the base. Of course, what that does is form a Janus between the dictator and a kind of revolutionary counterpoised, e.g., Assad : AQ-types in the Syrian revolution; and from Egypt, Mobarak : Muslim Brotherhood. Different talk — same walk.

The Boston Globe ran a wrap-up on the Tsarnaev Brothers today: Boston Marathon bombings could provide insight into other killings – Opinion – The Boston Globe – 1/8/2014.  Posted to my status bar, it brought the complaint that Americans and the American domestic security establishment just don’t get it: ” . . .  because we are too stupid to understand that terrorists really mean to kill us and only because they hate us.”

I should think contempt inseparable from an unchecked narcissism, and hate and its related butchery inseparable from the compound formed around here of “civilizational narcissism” (Haider Mobarak’s pet) and “malignant narcissism”, both of which have been addressed repeatedly on this blog.

Regard the reference to the NSA, can and will “the terrorist” signal be found and distilled from language by capable computers?  Part of the answer is as above at least as regards the pools of candidates: slip some litmus into the conversation and see what colors come up in relation to it.

If the sifting is passive, watch for characteristic signal signatures like “crusader west” in traffic.

If we accept that the democratic free speech concept specifically protects discomforting political speech, including hate speech, which is what we do in the U.S., then separating the mouths with the bad attitudes from those who will operationalize their ideas becomes a little more challenging, the packaging of the sociopathic content being contained in many aspects of expression not signaled by exploiting a specific rhetoric rendered recognizable through its repeated phrases.

* * *

A good listener, imho (and just because I think so), applies analog and metaphor to what he hears as he hears it.  In essence, the listening is turned toward implication, which in turn requires imagination and a nimble mind for the poetry — i.e., the internal established and potential relationships threaded into the metonymy of the language of interest.

Empathy helps.

Manufacturing a computer that “listens” to language and queries as rapidly as data arrives is just about speed and parsing; getting to an appliance that “listens well” and, in a sense, listens ahead of the speaker’s thoughts, well, for that, you have to hire somebody like me.

🙂

In fact, call me “a piece of work” in that regard, and I’ll take it as a compliment.

FTAC – Syria – On Mirroring Amplification in Brutality

The swings of cultural brutality involve mirroring amplification — as with brothers trading punches and raising the force used as they go, but that’s for fun — and a kind of dumbness as to where brutalization leads, which always is in two directions: the defeat of the human spirit and attendant subjugation or the Great God of War and Fire Without Limit and self-immolation in an orgy of death.

This dynamic seems not well understood in Syria.

Some wars end with an entropic complete expenditure of available energy, i.e., only stopping when there’s none left and some in the destruction of the war making capability of the enemy in its totality: no industry; no money; no projectiles; no weapons; no defenses.

Syria, because the same mentality sits on both sides of the table — it’s not the Wahhabism or the dictatorship separately: it’s the mutual quest for absolute power in the subjugation of others, each with its own political program — has a long way to go. The suffering of civilians and the destruction of moderating force carries no weight with the fighters on either side, even if each may believe he’s the savior of humanity aligned with his side.

The conversation follows from a state-aligned Syrian outlet impugning the character of the United States by portraying her as a terrorist arms supplier.

It’s not true.

The arms are loose Out There and gambling on secular technocrats like General Idris has proven, so far, bad odds.  Those Islamic Front fellows are mean: they promise to protect military assets held by more moderate warriors only to steal them for themselves and their immoderate ends (something like that: e.g., US, UK halt aid to Syria after weapons seized – 12/11/2013).

* * *

I hope you read the above “mean” as campy pouting understatement, a remark, in fact, about those trusting, uncertain, or vacillating souls who make deals with ruthless liars and killers.

Well, perhaps the embarrassments of December — perhaps along with some sense of limits that have been exceeded —  have done some much needed motivational work:

Even as ISIS, which got its start as al-Qaeda in Iraq back in the days of the American war, regains territory in the Iraqi province of Anbar, it is slowly being pushed out of its northern Syrian strongholds by a broad coalition of moderate and Islamist groups fed up with its draconian interpretations of Islamic law and its abuses of power.

Some items on the web are ever-new or evergreen, and many of them play at this time of the year; however, “West Bank Story” may be one that plays beside the regret that things could be and could have been different eight years ago and should be and by now should have been different today.

The film’s official web site provides back-story; that I found the link earlier this day on Facebook tells how our communications environment has changed since 2005: the clip was new at first encounter, a little disappointing for having been posted in November of 2012, and now illuminating to find it traces back to 2005.

The world that does not know what to do with its hate — or understand why it has that wired into its social grammar in selective parts — may find “West Bank Story” again relevant at this time next year.  Everyone else, however, may wish it God’s speed into irrelevance and transformation into a charming artifact left to grace the lid of the dust bin of history to which the middle east conflict and much else may one day be consigned.

▶ SYRIA: New Massacre in Sadad against Christians (Nov.2013, Homs countryside) – YouTube – Posted 11/5/2013.

______

The two videos are not in perfect chronological order or spatial relationship, but the approximation nonetheless makes its point.

The preying on the believing by attaching monotheist faith to messianic and grandiose delusion, a part of the signal of “civilizational narcissism”, “malignant narcissism”, narcissistic political sociopathy (reference “Facsimile Bipolar Political Sociopathy”) leads to darkness.

The Jewish attitude toward others is very different, conservative and scaled down when hateful — so the Jewish people set themselves apart from what they believe isn’t so good, unless directly threatened, a defensive rather than crusading posture (reference: The Peace and Violence of Judaism: From the Bible to Modern Zionism: Robert Eisen: 9780199751471: Amazon.com: Books), and if wanting to elicit some change in others, Rabbi Kook’s advice might prevails:

“The purely righteous do not complain about evil, rather they add justice. They do not complain about heresy, rather they add faith. They do not complain about ignorance, rather they add wisdom.”

One may respect the “chosen” qualities of others.

One may also bring light to darkness.

The Al Qaeda affiliates in Syria, believing themselves possessed of all the answers, swiftly inhibit the freedom of thought among the ranks of children.

Perhaps as a rule, autocrats and autocratic societies drain and suffocate their subjugated constituencies, which afford “narcissistic supply” to those who then enrich and aggrandize themselves without limits.

______

Syria may have General Idris as one side, but the other two are on the same side even though opposed in battle.

The Assad Regime and the Al Qaeda affiliates are of the same mind — repeat: different content and rant but same psychopathology.  This abstract observation may be hard to see at first but over time and with the death and displacement of millions of souls who don’t share their outlooks, the source of the conflict in the mind becomes apparent.

What to do about it?

Well, the world is failing Syria, imho, but the development and sustaining of the Syrian Civil War represents chiefly the failures of different but psychologically similar external governments, Russia and Saudi Arabia and their related political complexes, who will now be seen as backing competing autocratic-totalitarians in the Syrian theater.

Israel has confined itself to responding to some urgent humanitarian needs; the United States has fumbled on the issues — somebody in State should be tracking this blog — and has been trying to back away from the association of the anti-Assad revolution with the developing presence and power of the al Qaeda affiliates.

FTAC – A Note on Language Invented and Sustained “Habits of Mind”

embedded habits of mind, language, psychology

Language may be the cultural tool that we invent to invent and sustain ourselves in coherent isolated societies. Very few societies — language cultures, all — remain purely themselves given encounters with conflict, including invasion, and with expanding trade relationships. For western onlookers involved with the Islamic Small Wars, the Sunni-Shiite schism and much else have been only latent to western popular knowledge and not latent at all in the minds of the owners of each respective legacy who are now the captives of their own archaic thought as contained by old language and, indeed, related “habits of mind”.

The Islamic Small Wars will end with poetry, not bullets, with freedom from archaic language, not subjugation, with mere human equality — and with “compassion, humility, inclusion, and integrity — and not the delusions of grandeur associated with supremacist hegemony.

______

All of the above . . . because I say so.

😉

The full brief would be lengthier and more complicated, but suffice it to say that what has happened in Iraq and Syria and elsewhere along the links of the Islamic Small Wars owns no place other than the past among the world’s nations.  The enthused fighting in Syria, however vigorous, becomes also more socially incoherent and subject to individual and small group interests by the day, and similarly motivated fighting and “struggle” elsewhere seem not to prove any better as regards gaining traction in their districts.

FTAC – Introducing, Recalling the Ouroboros

One appreciates your resolve, would that the instructions, historically enforced, regarding dhimmi status for Jews and Christians were absent from the text. That one element alone lends dignity to the Muslim’s position at the expense of Christians and Jews, not to mention what’s in store for everyone else. It’s a flattering concept; it probably feels large (as in “living large”) but that seems to me a facet of an unbridled and untenable narcissism of a sort to which the world, Muslims first, must respond.

Islam shimmers with this aspect that may embrace and welcome in one part while also reserving to itself the mission to destroy others without restraint. That part today it wishes to cast off, which it must to save itself culturally and socially, but its head meets its tail in this again and again and again across time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouroboros

Civilizational narcissism and the Ouroboros would seem thematic kin.

With either, we may drown in our own reflection or, same thing, devour ourselves, such is the nature of all closed ideological and tribal systems.

A good architect would not only design in some path of retreat out of his magnum opus but also a gateway to other gardens and a window to other worlds.

FNS – Glick on Being Jewish and Sustaining Judaism

The Jewish drama, as set out in the Bible, is the story of a nation that from the outset and until the present day chooses freedom over submission, while maintaining allegiance to a sacred trust, and an ancient people and a promised land.
When you understand this, remaining Jewish is a privilege, not a sacrifice.

Caroline B. Glick: Why 71% of Jews believe that leaving Judaism is not a tragedy but simply a natural progression – 10/9/2013.

Well, Ms. Glick, some young fill up on Jewish this and Jewish that and tons of Holocaust imagery and lore and wish not to be bothered the minute they have the option to be free of all of that; and some old turn around in America to find themselves demographically marooned and not much interested in living in the Jewish State.

However, among the mixed multitude in freedom-loving and predominantly “Judeo-Christian” America, “choosing freedom over submission” would seem Jewish strictly or Jewish casually for the vast majority whatever their religious affiliation may be, modern Muslims included.

That, we know, is not Jewish enough to sustain Judaism and the marvels it promotes in ethical and moral thought, the Jewish experience comprising in part a Great Soulful Conversation About God and Man Inspired by the Torah.

However, ask an agnostic, nonobservant Jew to accept Christ or recite the Shahada and see what those numbers do.

***

Expect converts and reverts.

Expect resurgence.

Latent in phase, no better testimony has been provided to the Jewish People and Israel than that expressed by those who have spent their lives full of animosity and hatred for both.

Hillel the Elder

"That which is distasteful to thee do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and study."

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
