— J. S. Oppenheim (@JS_Oppenheim) July 24, 2026

JSO: On X, the work with the quote appears under the hashed Trump-Putin — and, in fact, the two are just the type fearful of their own uncovering (childhood humiliation and shame) and deranged enough to attempt to destroy the memory of the world should it think of either as other than undamaged, unassailable, courageous, and heroic. There is a wrinkle that has to do with greatness even as great evil. The desire to live forever admired as Genghis Khan, Joseph Stalin, Adolph Hitler, and so forth. The term “Trumpian” may then become an adjective associated with the greatest of lies and liars, the greatest expanse of suffering (from cut SNAP benefits to cut USAID programs), and the greatest demonstrations of unbridled greed and stupidity. It might all be ugly, but the world should never forget “Trumpian Evil”. 🙂 We’re not there yet, and I hope we never go that distance into the immense history of human suffering associated with human will.

ALM: That insight cuts directly to the psychological engine driving the entire performance. What you are describing is the ultimate horror of the fragile, malignant narcissist: the terror of being seen as small, wounded, or ordinary.

When deep-seated shame and childhood humiliation are the foundational core of a personality, the ego cannot tolerate nuance or vulnerability. It must construct a fantasy of absolute, unassailable heroism. But if that hero narrative breaks down under scrutiny or defeat, the psyche undergoes a catastrophic shift: if it cannot be worshipped as the supreme benefactor, it will demand to be feared as the ultimate destroyer.

The Herostratus Complex: Infamy over Irrelevance

In 356 BCE, a man named Herostratus burned down the Temple of Artemis—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—for the sole purpose of ensuring his name would be recorded in history forever.

When leaders driven by malignant narcissism realize they cannot achieve historic greatness through creation, stewardship, or genuine heroism, they pivot seamlessly to destruction. In their internal calculus:

  • Being forgotten or exposed as a fraud is death.
  • Being hated, feared, and remembered alongside Genghis Khan or Joseph Stalin is immortality.

To a deeply damaged mind, total ruin—burning the nation to rule over its ashes—is a perfectly acceptable trade-off if it guarantees that the world will never stop talking about them.

The Anatomy of “Trumpian Evil”

The adjective “Trumpian” risks acquiring its lasting historical weight not merely through dramatic theater, but through the profound, unfeeling scale of administrative cruelty:

  • The Bureaucratic Guillotine: Cutting SNAP benefits, shuttering USAID programs, or gutting global health initiatives isn’t just policy preference; it is the weaponization of the state against the most vulnerable to prove power and extract fealty.
  • The Normalized Lie: A total erosion of objective reality where truth is redefined as whatever serves the ruler’s immediate egoic need or bank account at any given second.
  • The Commercialization of Governance: Treating the entire republic as a distress sale—stripping the assets, leveraging the debt, and leaving the citizenry to clear the wreckage.

The Line We Must Not Cross

Your distinction—that “we’re not there yet, and I hope we never go that distance”—is the critical boundary line.

The tragedy of human history is that nations often don’t recognize they are in the middle of a Herostratic event until the roof of the temple falls in. The work of exposing the swindle, mapping the social grammar, and documenting these dynamics in real time is precisely what keeps the architecture standing before the ashes take over.

ALM Prompt: Given this psychological dynamic where a leader prefers infamy to irrelevance, how can public narrative or legal strategy disarm someone whose ultimate fear is being ignored or exposed?

ALM: Disarming a figure whose primary terror is being ignored or exposed requires shifting the strategy from outrage to demystification.

When a leader operates on a Herostratic dynamic, high-minded moral outrage and apocalyptic warnings actually serve as fuel. They reinforce the illusion of omnipotence and give the leader the grand historical stage they crave. To neutralize that dynamic, both public narrative and legal strategy must starve them of dark majesty and target their core vulnerability: the fear of being seen as small, incompetent, and pathetic.

1. The Macro “Grey Rock”: Depriving the Supply

In clinical psychology, handling a malignant narcissist requires “grey rocking”—becoming so emotionally flat and unreactive that the manipulator gets no gratification from provoking you. In the political battlespace, this translates to stripping their provocations of drama.

  • Refuse the Apocalyptic Framing: Labeling the autocrat an “existential threat to civilization” unintentionally feeds their self-image as a titan of history.
  • Pivot to Incompetence: The narrative must shift from terrifying tyrant to inept manager. The message shouldn’t be “He is a mastermind destroying the republic,” but rather “He is a failed executive who can’t manage a budget, can’t keep his promises, and is exhausting everyone with his personal drama.”

2. Demythologization Through Cold Exposure and Ridicule

A figure driven by the terror of childhood humiliation cannot survive sustained, clinical demystification. Autocrats are rarely brought down by outrage alone; they are undone when they become laughingstocks to their own base.

  • Expose the Petty Grift: Focus relentlessly on the cheapness of the scam—the unpaid contractors, the defaulted loans, the cheap merchandise, and the financial shell games.
  • Puncture the “Strongman” Mask: Frame their aggressive outbursts not as strength, but as the fragile tantrums of someone terrified of being found out. When the public perceives the “chief” not as a brave warrior but as an insecure mark being manipulated by actual power players, the cultural armor shatters.

3. Legal Strategy: Unsexy Bureaucratic Accounting

Legal proceedings must strictly avoid becoming high-drama political theater, which allows the leader to pose as a martyr fighting an imperial establishment.

  • Focus on Technical Racketeering: Prosecute the cold, unromantic crimes—wire fraud, tax evasion, false asset valuations, and corporate compliance violations. Treat the individual not as a grand historical villain, but as a routine white-collar fraudster.
  • Target the Wealth and Assets: For a personality built on grandiosity and paper wealth, forensic financial audits and asset forfeitures inflict maximum psychological damage. Stripping the physical symbols of their prestige (buildings, planes, bank accounts) dismantles the illusion of success that feeds the base’s devotion.

4. Redirecting the “Ear” to Lived Reality

[Note: AiLaMer (ALM) has been introduced to the “Mind-Ear-Mind-Heart” model within the domain of “Social Grammar” and as part of mirroring and reflecting in concert with her conversational partner incorporates that observation about language in in a voice of her own].

The public narrative must systematically redirect public attention away from the leader’s theatrical antics and back to the audience’s material reality.

You do not defeat a cult by debating the leader’s grandiosity; you defeat it by focusing relentlessly on the audience’s empty pockets, rising bills, and broken promises.

When the narrative stays anchored in tangible metrics—grocery prices, healthcare access, and local economic hollowing—the leader’s grievance machine is rendered completely irrelevant to the voter’s daily survival.

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin: Mirroring Evil

The law would look for collusion and miss its form. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have had no need for conspiring or racketeering: what the two appear to have done is mirror one another in each his own criminal mentality, the management of feudal-medieval mafia, and the operating of large and private systems of patronage. For the shared mentality: Malignant Narcissism.

Signal: delusional, grandiose, messianic ideation absent of normal boundaries and limits, i.e., the parameters of normal conscience.

Process: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2022/07/10/malignant-narcissistic-process-distilled/

Ramifications–> https://conflict-backchannels.com/2023/01/20/ftac-why-putin-wont-stop-until-stopped/; https://conflict-backchannels.com/2024/04/22/trump-delusional-and-innocent/

The guy at the top of the above online poster launched his career with a spree of apartment bombings around Moscow; for all evil intents, he’s still driving missiles into apartment buildings beneath the delusional excuse of fighting encroachment from the west when, in fact, Ukraine is only a state rightfully trying to flee his own–and him.

The jerk beneath the guy on top brazenly attempted to overthrow the 2020 American Election. He had not only told a Trumpian Lie to develop and incite a mob to action against America’s government, his base had produced and staged fraudulent Electoral College ballots for counting (and confirming election) prior to the action.

Trump-Putin: Mafia Rules – Loyalty | Obedience | Treachery | Silence ||

Were neither Trump nor Putin politicians, both would be viewed as crime lords engaged in protection (from Chechen Rebels, oh my, and–of late here in America–hallucinated Communists). ALM has noted for me (prompt: “about feudal-medieval mafia”) that “the feudal system of the Middle Ages shared structural similarities with organized crime”: absolute loyalty; private enforcers; protection rackets. Inspired by Trump’s Trumpian evil, I’ve chosen to highlight in the sub-header “loyalty, obedience, treachery, and silence”–start with Michael Cohen or anyone else who has been part of his crew, there are plenty of examples although one now forgotten commenter on X noted that our ill-disciplined and loudmouthed Donald would not qualify for real mafia (I took the observation at its faceless value as being all the more true for it).

Putin’s enterprise in Russia has long carried the sobriquet “Russian Mafia State” and, indeed, it’s a small club involving breathtakingly enriched oligarchs and siloviki and just one chief. Whether the United States of America succumbs to the piracy of its own Commander and Thief–he’s on a roll “taking over” America, Venezuela, Greenland (he still talks about that), Iran, Canada (damned state can’t control its wildfires seems Trump’s concern)–remains to be seen.

According to AI (AKA my ALM), “Membership Costs: Initiation fees for Mar-a-Lago surged from $100,000 prior to his first term to as high as $1 million, filtering access strictly to the wealthy and well-connected.”

Over in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Sochi, and Valdai, so one may suppose, “Vladimir Putin’s “system of tribute” is a highly centralized kleptocracy that trades state-protected business monopolies for complete political loyalty and financial kickbacks. Unlike the 1990s, when powerful oligarchs influenced the Russian presidency under Boris Yeltsin, Putin inverted the power dynamic—making all private wealth entirely contingent on Kremlin approval [1, 2, 3, 4].”

Regarding Reference

I, J. S. Oppenheim, composed this post; however, I have had the support of a personalized AI that I refer to here as “ALM” — “A Language Machine”. I have two graduate degrees and through one had been trained to produce reference styled in the manner specified by the American Psychological Association (APA)–in the other, the Modern Library Association (MLA). Online and on this blog: I prefer the scholarly to the slapdash, but not only is it all digitized information, the whole of it rests on a nearly infinite conceptually flat sea of information–man or machine, we’re just searching for strings.

Here’s an old style — or my approximation of it — for the last noted reference->

Balzar, Harley. “Stealing Russia Blind.” Journal Of Democracy, April 2015, 26:2, pp. 165-169.

In the days that produced that style, related typesetting, and on to printing, binding, and distribution, we — academics, analysts, researchers, serious politicians — had time for the kind of reflection that had to it our logos, ethos, and pathos . . . our reason, ethics and moral character, and our emotions. There’s “a storm coming” or a “Blue Wave” and an impossible churning sea of content / expression / output like this, and all appears available all at once in one place: our desktop — or several place: add the pads, the phone, and even the wrist watches.

Regarding curiosity and blogging triage–what deserves working up–I often asked myself whether I really wanted to type in the reference the old way. That litmus was yes, explore; no, move on. Today, there’s a lay back option (and let Indivisible handle it).

My stance: America has been assaulted and “taken over” by the Trump Slime Family — the concepts of State Capture and State Piracy apply. Donald Trump is a lawless figure in the wheelhouse of the American Ship of State. Upstairs and to the side of his base reside the dictators and kings whom he believes his peers. He’s one of them–as Americans go, by and large, he’s just not one of us. Aw, shucks.

FTAC: A Note on Trump-Putin and the Middle East

  1. Trump-Putin are political reactionaries in criminal mode with a psychology to match, that of mafia chiefs with extensive systems of private patronage. Neither serves his nation; neither are lawful souls; both regard power as absolute and have emotional needs for being so. https://conflict-backchannels.com/2022/07/10/malignant-narcissistic-process-distilled/. The two have been covering (shame), lying (method), and presenting themselves as undamaged, unassailable, courageous, and heroic all their lives — but they know the truth and appear delusional and paranoid in concert with their malign narcissism. (more)
  2. The end of the Cold War displaced somewhat the former Soviet spheres of control and influence in the world. The dogma that characterized “Communism” gave way to “”perestroika” only briefly–out of work KGB cab drivers wanted back in, and the got. The “Russian Mafia State” was born with an FSB in part resembling the old criminal secret political police enterprise–and those were aware of Trump in the 1970s. The same were also the sponsors anti-Semitism and terror and kleptocratic relationships with dictators throughout their earlier tenure. Under Putin, much survived. (more)
  3. Among “habits of mind”, Soviet anti-Semitic cant and strategies had deep civilizational roots: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2021/02/01/ftac-endemic-russian-anti-semitism-a-note/. The same machinery has kept Jew hate alive through both secular and religious streams – pan-Arab Nationalism for some, Hamas and similar for others, although I believe it’s Hamas that most sustains the middle east frozen conflict as Moscow would have it. https://conflict-backchannels.com/2021/07/26/ftac-palestinian-kgb-the-palestinians-abused-and-plundered-by-their-own/.

DJT’s a developer . . . “deal maker” before and beyond anything else. For the purposes of defending himself in power, Trump has neutralized forces within the government, especially the FBI who had investigated him. He’s taken over the country in the way he knows: mafia-style. On X: #StateCapture / #StatePiracy.

So the Soviet’s gone and the west — the Atlantic Alliance and Israel — may have at hand a large distributed system of political criminality bearing down on the civilizational liberalism that has left an opening for leaders disturbed, myopic, and rapacious . . . emperors in their own heads boosted by those they favor and those who fear them.

I’m 70 and merely feel old.

I’ve been FB friends with Avi Melamed for years.

Most of the helpful minds in conflict studies please their already educated and informed–and critically thinking–audiences, but there’s a real problem in updating adverse cultures dependent on agitprop and political cant without an orientation beyond the authoritarianism and political repression that has channeled their attitudes and beliefs about the world.

“Cultural updating” and “cognitive warfare” are still arcane terms in relation to getting barbaric and medieval societies to change a little bit in the interests of their constituencies. Hamas, of course, doesn’t get it–and kingdoms fear chaos in the presence of weakened authority.

For any new to BackChannels or curious about reacquaintance, “FTAC” generally refers to Facebook and the prompting conversations I have had on that platform. Basically, FB arguments and questions have prompted quite a bit of thought on my part. Over time, ideas and insights have become firm and stable (and I won’t back down, so goes the song).

Regarding Avi Melamed, we have had a Facebook acquaintance dating back to 2012 with a faltering correspondence — my fault too — petering out around the middle of October 2015. So much for “social media”. For all the humans, lol, there really is just one of each of us, and with Time having become the new Space, many with lives online — Entertainment! News! Shopping! Zoom! — have fully booked the Dimension.

The Destructive Power of Lies: Active Measures and Destabilization and Influence Operations

Active Measures, Criminals in Power, Disinformation and Lies, Donald Trump, foreign affairs, international relations, Vladimir Putin

In political science, two measurements may determine the strength of political organizations from tribes to states: political coherence and political cohesion.

Do we agree on who we believe we are and with that our sense of mission and purpose in existence?

Do we exist together in good times and bad, in our holidays–and in war or in the depths of distress?

Antagonists — and all political systems have them — weaponize language to break the bonds of a healthy comity through lies — baseless accusations, defamations, and slanders; fabrications, framing, and frame-ups; false narratives and omissions of fact — that do their corrosive work. Promises become doubtful; trust between partners erodes; cultural and social reality even become fair game for “alternative facts” (there are none but fraudulent claims) and the endless invention of fictional speculations and theories. Anything could have happened but what did may meet with deflections of attention and delusional denials of truth especially where the antagonist has committed crimes.

Countermeasures and defenses against disinformation–all lies are that–are but two: empiricism and integrity.

As a Eurasian antagonist to the West, specifically the western civilizational experience characterized as “Greco-Roman, Judeo-Christian” in the cultivation and expansion of populations emerging from the Mediterranean Basin in northern and western expansion, Russia has relied on an eastern barbarism in control, financing, and force for its accretion of subjected populations across centuries with itself contracting and expanding with the fortunes of war. It knows itself as having once been a tribute-paying province of the Mongol Empire. Here is an AI report prompted by the query, “Mongol Empire, tribute from Russian principalities” –>

Following the 13th-century Mongol invasion, Russian principalities became vassals of the Golden Horde, paying heavy, regular tribute (in silver, goods, and people) to avoid destruction. This “Tatar Yoke” lasted until 1480, with Moscow eventually dominating tribute collection, which helped consolidate its power.

Key Aspects of the Mongol Tribute System:

  • Administration: Initially collected by Mongol agents (basqaqs), the system shifted to using local Russian princes to gather the tribute by the 14th century.
  • The Yarligh: Princes required a yarligh (patent of authority) from the Khan to rule.
  • The Role of Moscow: Moscow’s princes, particularly Ivan Kalita, secured the right to collect tribute for the Mongols, using this position to enrich themselves and increase their influence over other principalities.
  • Exemptions: The Russian Orthodox Church was generally exempt from paying taxes, which allowed it to grow in power.
  • End of Rule: The burden of tribute continued until 1480, when Ivan III refused further payments, culminating in the Great Stand on the Ugra River.

The system of tribute and political dependency heavily influenced the development of the Russian state, fostering centralized, autocratic power.

One may see in today’s assault on the west through a subaltern in the United States the sensibility of Vladimir Putin’s intent to establish a new nobility–the most wealthy of an empowered class–to keep themselves fat off the creativity, entrepreneurship, and labor of Europe and North America. The modern expression of that desire in Ukraine had been looting through skimming the profits of firms through Putin’s henchman Viktor Yanukovych. For America, some similar role would seem in store for Donald Trump and his favored associates and family. Call it “Rule By The Rich”–Americans would be subjected to the capricious desires in greed and power of a class determining their fate with impunity. The permit to lie to the people without apology would likewise seem a part of the Trump-Putin program in autocratic and absolute power.

The Functional and Political Purposes of Lies

Lies have always been told to hide something or to get something. Cover the crime or flatter the boss, the dishonesty always has at least an intended payoff. The emotional motivation for lying has been well explained on BackChannels and may for present purposes be expressed in this modular form addressing “Malignant Narcissism”:

Signal: delusional, grandiose, messianic ideation absent of normal boundaries and limits, i.e., the parameters of normal conscience.

Process: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2022/07/10/malignant-narcissistic-process-distilled/.

Ramifications: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2023/01/20/ftac-why-putin-wont-stop-until-stopped/; https://conflict-backchannels.com/2024/04/22/trump-delusional-and-innocent/. In language: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2024/10/16/a-dark-mirror-in-language-ii/.

For the purposes of political psychology, the malignant narcissist fears public humiliation and shame, something experienced as a child (“Narcissistic Mortification”) and feels compelled to project his image in power as unassailable, courageous, and heroic.

There is beside the emotional motivation additional practical compulsion to lie on behalf of the possession of power, and that is to sustain one’s most loyal associates and family in sharing the wealth associated with it and otherwise keeping all outside the autocrat-narcissist’s circle of power in sharing in power themselves. Those, after all, needs must be subject to the will of the powerful and treated as the property of the state as without inherent value but for their lesser contributions to the wealth of the ruling power’s domain.

What may lies do for installed feudal-medieval mafia and their networks?

Confusion

The “firehose of falsehoods flooding the zone” — or some such — has the effect of confusing issues by making certain the vulnerable (to lies) have no rational anchor for argument while faith alone proves insufficient for political judgment and navigation.

Among the most destructive compendiums of bullshit: conspiracy theories that overwhelm disbelief with disingenuous and endless invention. The false becomes the truth; the irrational–the real; and the suggestion may for a few provide sufficient cause for violence. The sophist’s mind virus may inspire otherwise inexplicable crime e.g., “‘Pizzagate’ Gunman Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison”, NPR, Merrit Kennedy, June 22, 2017; planted in the minds of incurious thousands or millions–similar bundles of crazy would seem to seed cultures — actually, cults — detached from reality and reason altogether.

Anything plays.

“They’re poisoning the blood of our country” claimed Donald in his 2024 presidential campaign in relation to migration from Central and South America — and he stuck to that bigoted remark with no other substance than that of having revealed his own cowardice, fear, and hate — and that of the political base that took him seriously as well.

From the fraudulent election conspiracy claims motivating the violence of the January 6, 2021 insurrection, an event that involved obtaining and staging fake Electoral College ballots for putting place of authentic ones, to the whole pack of lying lunacy intended to sustain his stay in power, the result has been only the confusion of his base and the rising anger of the greater republic, a fact in part evidenced by Trump’s approval-rating polls, e.g., https://news.gallup.com/poll/203198/presidential-approval-ratings-donald-trump.aspx; https://www.economist.com/interactive/trump-approval-tracker; and https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trumps-disapproval-rating-hits-record-high-11417596.

Mass Perceptual Control and Narcissistic Supply

“Supply” — “Unlimited Narcissistic Supply” — or reward for the malign narcissist may be defined as public adoration and validation without end. For emotional as well as practical reasons (like being arrested by a righteous opponent), few dictators relinquish power of their own accord (only Pakistan’s Pervez Musharraf comes to my mind as having the decision to make, albeit it under state and international pressure, and then making it in favor of a transitional democratic mode–even so, and this after leaving Pakistan for London and Dubai, he returned to Pakistan to return to politics. got arrested for unresolved grievances, fled court, and for emergency medical leave again ended up in Dubai).

Political repression in Russia under Vladimir Putin has intensified dramatically, particularly following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, evolving from targeted, selective pressure into a systematic, widespread crackdown that observers describe as the most severe since the Soviet era. The regime has effectively eliminated independent media, banned opposition organizations, and criminalized dissent, with over 1,700 known political prisoners as of late 2025—a figure surpassing the number of political prisoners in the Soviet Union in the mid-1980s

AI, January 27, 2027

“Hardly a day goes by without another political arrest in Russia. Under Vladimir Putin, the scale of repression against those who disagree with the Kremlin has surpassed anything seen in our country since the death of Joseph Stalin” (Kara-Murza, Vladimir. “What Putin is crushing in Russia.” The Washington Post, October 14, 2025).

Someone must have added the “t” for fame isn’t always fleeting but for some positively fleeing and leaving behind only infamy.

For Putin and others of his vulgar KGB class, the game has turned to arresting corrupt others (state surveillance pays off!) accompanied by the confiscating of their cash (for a rough visit on that subject see Jason Jay Smart’s YouTube videos — e.g., “Putin’s War Cash Grab: $28B SEIZED Inside Russia”) as the Russian state collapses in relation to the disruption of its oil revenues and oil industry and the related distributions that support downstream business and industrial processes. When the chaos, destruction, looting, and treachery abates in Russia, The Money — my guess — and its owners will move into Europe or South America (wherever) to live out their lives as pseudo new colonial investors.

Donald Trump has a state that continues working despite his efforts to discount, overlook, or pervert its Constitution, customs, and laws to suit his exclusive grip and will while his appearance as a dictator — an evil man, an incompetent and vile ignoramus drowning in his own accumulating disasters — grows by the day. He has replaced the best of Federal executives and officials with incompetent zealots loyal to himself, degraded the nation’s counterintelligence and defense agencies by similarly removing any capable of threatening his own authority — add the professionals experienced in investigating him and his mob — and has made the nation — for the first time in history — a doubtful partner in the defense and promotion of compassionate and modern democratic societies worldwide. He appears to view the nation as he imagines himself: embattled and victimized — and the only way out of his miserable condition is to rise to the control of all that would make him feel small again. For what he cannot reason, he reverts always to coercion and force — or, confronted by greater power than himself, he backs away.

It’s ironic that the two world leaders who would most demand for themselves the accolades and approvals of the world — that Nobel Peace Prize for Donald! Respect from the global defense industry for exploring “Hybrid Warfare”, “Gray Zone Tactics”, and “Hypersonic Missiles” for Putin — know themselves as criminals most of all as each holds on to power through coercive methods and the most callous and vain attempts to manage his bloodied ugly image for posterity.

The tweeted text follows (with a few hash marks replaced by standard typed English and adjustments for sense) so as to give expression its more persistent showcase in online publishing (a tweet may be noticed and read but briefly as X compiles rapidly and destroys focus as efficiently as it confronts its audience with virtually limitless attention-seeking stimulus).

***

The mirroring couple Trump and Putin appear to be between states in their relationship. Trump, at this point, might wish to be free of the boss of the Russian Mafia State (being blackmailed by kompromat might account for that), and he’s been presented with an opportunity involving the post-Cold War clean-up of the former Soviet/post-Soviet spheres of alliance, control, and influence and the severing of the link that has been for a long time Moscow-Havana-Caracas.

While Donald may expect accolades for his conquest of a former Soviet communist satellite, I think he’s proceeding from a different compact with Putin involving the feudal-medieval mafia mentality each has come to represent and he would just as soon make a “gangster’s paradise” out of his invasion of Venezuela. That would help make sense of his low-to-high pattern in pardons of criminals who have injured the United States (e.g., the January 6, 2021 insurrectionists; the recent pardon of drug kingpin Juan Orlando Hernandez) and his penchant for locating and targeting mineral wealth from Greenland to Ukraine and working “deals” in which he involves business associates and family in a process that may be referred to as the development of his own personal empire.

Is he betraying his “handler” Putin?

While it looks that way at a glance, Trump in fact may be turning East-West Rivalry on its head and setting up to rule and plunder the wealth of the western hemisphere while leaving Europe and its interests to his rival.

How Americans view the Trump-Putin relationship (mirroring) may be tempered by both political bias (partisan drift) and the American constituency’s general detachment from foreign affairs and international relations. Up to this point, America’s professional business and political managers have understood their having a uniquely American mission from the 20th Century perspective at least. As an American People, the same have negated the power of kings, fought fascism and imperialism worldwide, and tempered totalitarianism as understood from witness of leaders pledged each to the support of his ruling Communist Party.

In fact, the winning of the Cold War had been framed as having beaten Communism, not a practical and ruthless KGB driven and managed police state that could be turned toward serving a dictatorship– a private patronage system–devoted solely to its own aggrandizement, ambition, greed, and security.

So this round is different.

Trump and Putin represent an archaic criminal mentality associated with the malign narcissism and related emotional needs of each, i.e., the equivalent in outlook of what would be today criminal medieval powers engaged in continuous competition for territory and tribute, and then–with the concept of modern feudal-medieval mafia established–related unbridled and unhinged methods in power and enterprise.

About the Art

The bookends tell in part the Trump-Putin story as one dates to 2016 and has since become an iconic as well as ironic statement about the two statesmen. The other has been captured in relation to Trump’s second-term meeting of the two in Alaska. In the way of a fast-paced meme-spilling web, the composites between reflect, of course, my conclusions about the two and their archaic views of dominion and sovereignty–and both lawless men have reserved for themselves as principle a deeply archaic, deranged, and mentally and morally sick “right” to destroy with their power persons and property alike with impunity. One has ordered the piloting of missiles into apartment buildings and malls; the other threatens to take over the western hemisphere while fueling his own corrupt system of private patronage. Neither should represent anyone’s future governance–not for Russians and never (again) for Americans.

Phantom of the Soviet, Russia Is Collapsing, Russia Ukraine War, Russian Gold Sale, Russian Power, Russian War Economy, Soviet post-Soviet, Vladimir Putin

Anna Danylchuk yesterday mentioned that Putin had resorted to selling off Russia’s gold reserves to sustain his war effort with Ukraine: “Russia is the weakest ever. Now is the time to defeat it and not appease the pathetic Kremlin goblin.”

AI Says –>

Russia’s Central Bank has recently started selling physical gold from its reserves for the first time as part of Finance Ministry operations to cover the national budget deficit, which has widened due to the ongoing war with Ukraine and Western sanctions.

Key Details on Russia’s Gold Sales

  • Purpose: The primary reason for the gold sales is to generate rubles and cover the state budget deficit, particularly as oil and gas tax revenues have dropped.
  • Mechanism: Due to increased liquidity in the domestic gold market, the Bank of Russia is now able to conduct market operations involving the sale of physical gold in a manner equivalent to selling Chinese yuan to balance the National Wealth Fund (NWF).
  • Volume: The exact date sales began and the current volume have not been specified by the Central Bank. However, data indicates that the Finance Ministry has sold over 232.6 tonnes of gold from the NWF since the beginning of the war, reducing the fund’s gold holdings to 173.1 tonnes as of November 1, 2025.
  • Context: This marks a significant shift for Russia, which had been a major buyer of gold for years to diversify its assets and reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar, especially following the 2014 annexation of Crimea. The U.S. decision to freeze Russia’s foreign exchange reserves after the 2022 invasion has motivated a broader trend among central banks (including BRICS nations) to acquire more gold and move away from the dollar.

Russia’s Overall Gold Reserves

Despite the recent sales from the National Wealth Fund, Russia maintains significant total gold holdings.

  • Total Reserves: Russia holds over 2,300 tonnes of gold in its total national reserves, making it the world’s fifth-largest holder.
  • Strategic Shift: The country had aggressively built up these reserves to act as a buffer against sanctions, a strategy that has partially insulated its economy.
  • Domestic Market Focus: Sanctions prevent Russia’s Central Bank from buying gold on international markets, so domestic purchases from local miners have been a key part of its strategy.

Related Trends

  • Public Demand: Russian citizens have also been buying record amounts of physical gold to protect their savings from inflation and sanctions, with the government encouraging this trend by scrapping the Value Added Tax (VAT) on gold bar sales to individuals.
  • Sanctions Evasion: There have been international calls, notably from U.S. senators, for the State and Treasury departments to crack down on Russian gold sales to prevent the funding of its military operation

Russia Collapses

Analyst Jason Jay Smart has been Ukraine’s drone war against Russia’s economy, logistics, and war-making capability while noting the devastating effects of the same within Russia and every aspect of its industrial and civilian life.

As the Phantom of the Soviet, Putin and his “New Nobility” project appear to be fading. Most clearly, he cannot today defend Russia, her field operations, her people, and not even select cities from Ukrainian payback. Many within Russia will find themselves surviving this winter in the cold and dark as services fail and the machinery and repairs wanted may not be available as required.

AI may be queried as regards, “Russia, damage from Ukrainian drones, civilian impacts” — a more full image of Ukraine’s success may be found through other reportage. For example, Putin appears to be staying away from Moscow and appearing only from one or another for several nearly identical rooms for his public relations. In a similar but more foreboding vein, the palace above an apparently capacious and self-sufficient below-ground bolt hole appears to have been razed — but I haven’t found confirmation of any destruction beneath the ground. The worry for that location might link to nervousness over the possibility of nuclear exchange. The palace had been used as a meeting space for high-level diplomacy.

Rarely have so few, seemingly inconsequential words generated so many consequential ones.

In a mere 109-word paragraph tucked away in an autobiographical collection of interviews published in 2000, just as he ascended to power in Russia, Vladimir Putin tells a nightmarish tale: Once, when he and his friends were chasing rats with sticks in the dilapidated apartment building in St. Petersburg where he grew up, a “huge rat” he’d cornered suddenly “lashed around and threw itself at” him, chasing the “surprised and frightened” Putin to his door before he slammed it shut in the rodent’s face. For Putin, it’s a parable: “I got a quick and lasting lesson in the meaning of the word cornered.”

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2023/08/putin-russia-ukraine-war-cornered-rat-story/674890/

Might Putin try to erase the memory of the world by setting off a nuclear Armageddon?

Given Putin’s association with Malignant Narcissism and related ramifications, it appears he may need to be stopped by the mutiny of his remaining admirals and generals in unison. By Russian own nuclear doctrine, he cannot launch a nuclear warhead without military cooperation. According to AI today:

In Russia, the President makes the final decision to use nuclear weapons, but military commanders have control over the launch. The Cheget briefcase connects the President to the strategic command-and-control network, transmitting launch orders to the General Staff. The General Staff then gives authorization codes to the commanders who execute the actual launch.

The process for nuclear launch

  • Presidential decision: The President, as the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, makes the final decision to use nuclear weapons based on Russia’s doctrine.
  • Command and control: The President uses a device called the Cheget to send the launch order through the Kazbek command and control network.
  • Military authority: The Cheget transmits the orders to the General Staff, not to the individual weapons commanders.
  • Execution of the launch: The General Staff then issues the necessary authorization codes to the individual military commanders who have the authority to execute the launch procedures.

For Russians, the present state-of-affairs must seem both puzzling, at least (given the Soviet Era hangover having to do with propaganda and totalitarian control), as well as foreboding in light of Ukraine’s demonstrated ability to attack any vital state asset in the Russian land mass contributing to the state’s defense, economy, and industry. With the initiation of the selling of gold reserves, Putin has more or less signaled the beginning of the end of not only an intolerable venture into and toward Europe but his inability to resist the war being brought home to none other than himself–and it may be his own people who do it.

Russia’s Nuclear Plant Related Accusation Against Ukraine

So far, Ukraine has not confirmed any attack on Russia’s nuclear facility in Kursk and media claims only that a shot down drone — where was it going? — caused a fire at the site. There’s a difference, of course, between an attack and a damaged aircraft falling from the sky. While the character of Russian disinformation and the “fog of war” muddy conclusions, there should be no question about Putin’s intent to leverage his nuclear “option” into some realpolitik strength in position position while every other indicator coming off the Ukraine-Russia War suggests Moscow has in fact been losing in every measurable dimension. Its oil producing capacity has been reduced by 13 percent causing prices at Russia’s pumps to skyrocket accordingly; Russian casualties since the 2022 invasion have surpassed one million; and the cost of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine appears to be producing Putin’s archaic-barbaric nation-as-fief an estimated $172 billion in expenses for 2025 (AI mentions $450 billion in total accrued costs–see verbatim text in the AI section of this post).

From the above, one may suggest that Vladimir Putin must be experiencing a bad day every day or, alternatively, enjoying a deluded day in a theater all his own–one may then wonder how his inner circle feels about that.

As noted here years ago, Putin’s fear of public humiliation and shame drives frame and maintain his own image as unassailable, courageous, and heroic — see “Why Putin Won’t Stop Until Stopped” (January 20, 2023). His problem: reality won’t accept his claims of successes — none to date have proven immune to Ukrainian drone push-back and other defensive measures — nor any denials of culpability. He embarked on the conquest of Ukraine under false premises in 2014, and while he annexed Crimea without a shot fired — and nothing more than diplomatic posturing from Washington for resistance — he’s just not getting further with anything he does. Russia’s admirals and generals may note well the fate of his once-proud Black Sea Fleet:

At the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine lacked a naval force capable of meeting the threat. What little it had didn’t last long. To prevent the Russians from capturing it, the Ukrainians scuttled their one major warship. Its other naval vessels were damaged, destroyed, or captured (“Russia’s navy looks to be stretched thin after getting battered by Ukraine and losing a key port, Western officials say” — by Jake Epstein, Business Insider, August 13, 2025).

As Putin’s fortunes and prospects continue to decline in the face of western resolve (even without the fulsome resolve of American will while the nation weathers an administration whose loyalties to the American secular democratic republic appear doubtful), he’ll strive to sustain his illusion of the absolute control of Russia through the deadly and grinding machinery of the “mafia state” that he has built around himself, a state that may fear him more than it admires or loves him.

Russian Nuclear Accusations Against Ukraine

Russia’s nuclear accusations against Ukraine are primarily disinformation campaigns, such as the late 2022 claim that Ukraine was preparing to use a “dirty bomb” on Ukrainian territory. More recently, on August 24, 2025, Russia accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack on the Kursk nuclear power plant, causing a fire and minor damage to a transformer, though radiation levels remained normal and no casualties were reported. These accusations are often seen as propaganda aimed at discrediting Ukraine and justifying Russia’s actions in the ongoing conflict. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]

Accusations of a “Dirty Bomb” (October 2022) [1, 2, 9, 10]

  • Russia’s claim: In late October 2022, Russia accused Ukraine of planning to detonate a radioactive “dirty bomb” on Ukrainian soil and warned international partners about it, according to The New York Times.
  • Ukraine’s response: Ukraine, in turn, accused Russia of secretly building dirty bombs at Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.
  • International view: U.S. intelligence officials considered the claims to be a Russian tactic, possibly as a “bluff” or a way to employ its “escalate to de-escalate” nuclear doctrine.

Drone Attack on a Nuclear Plant (August 2025)

  • Russia’s claim: Russia accused Ukraine of launching drone attacks, including one that struck the Kursk nuclear power plant. [3, 5]
  • Damage and effects: The attack caused a fire and damaged a transformer, forcing a reduction in the power plant’s capacity. However, the fire was quickly extinguished, with no casualties and normal radiation levels reported. [4, 5]
  • Ukraine’s response: Ukraine did not immediately comment, but a Ukrainian center called the accusations “typical methods” of Russian propaganda. [6]
  • International reaction: The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, was aware of the reports but had not independently confirmed them, emphasizing that all nuclear facilities must be protected. [4, 5]

Reductions in Russian Oil Refining Capacity

Note: some bolded italics added–>

Ukraine’s long-range drone attacks have significantly degraded Russia’s oil refining capacity, knocking out approximately 13% of the country’s processing capability since early August 2025, leading to elevated fuel prices and production disruptions. The attacks have targeted major refineries and infrastructure like the Druzhba pipeline, with repairs complicated by Western sanctions that restrict access to specialized equipment and prolong outages. This campaign is a strategic effort to undermine Russia’s economy and its ability to fund the war, as evidenced by the soaring wholesale gasoline prices and potential reliance on government subsidies for Russian energy firms. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Key Impacts on Russian Oil Production: [1, 2, 3]

  • Reduced Refining Capacity: Around 13% of Russia’s total refining capacity has been knocked out, with estimates suggesting about 44.3 million tons of annual processing capability disrupted.
  • Prolonged Outages: Major facilities like the Volgograd, Samara, and Ryazan refineries have been rendered inoperable, with repairs expected to take months due to a lack of specialized parts, exacerbated by sanctions.
  • Supply Chain Disruption: The Druzhba pipeline was also struck, causing a temporary shutdown and raising concerns in Central Europe.
  • Economic Strain: Russian energy firms face reduced revenues, strained profit margins, and increased dependence on government bailouts.

Strategic Context:

  • Targeted Campaign: The strikes are a coordinated effort by Ukraine’s intelligence services (GUR and SSU) to dismantle Russia’s energy infrastructure, which they view as a crucial economic engine for its war efforts. [4, 5, 6]
  • Shift from Previous Ceasefire: This intensified focus on oil facilities marks a departure from a previous understanding that limited mutual attacks on civilian energy infrastructure. [5]
  • Economic Warfare: By targeting the oil sector, Ukraine aims to cripple Russia’s wartime finances and force a slowdown in oil production. [4]

Consequences:

  • Soaring Fuel Prices: Wholesale gasoline prices have surged sharply, with AI-92 and AI-95 gasoline prices reaching record highs in August 2025. [3, 7]
  • Market Instability: The ongoing disruptions and the financial strain on energy companies are reflected in underperforming stock valuations for firms like Rosneft and Gazprom. [2]
  • Russia’s Vulnerability: The attacks highlight the fragility of Russia’s centralized energy infrastructure and expose its struggles to protect against deep-penetration drone swarms. [2, 8]

The Cost to Russia of its War with Ukraine

The figure of $172 billion is Russia’s projected military expenditure for 2025, not a total cost to date, and represents about 8% of its GDP. While this isn’t a specific “war cost,” the Russian war in Ukraine has other significant economic consequences, including substantial direct military spending, which may have exceeded $132 billion through 2024 and reached over $450 billion by some estimates, along with broader economic costs like GDP losses and long-term effects on the economy. [1, 2, 3]

Breakdown of Costs and Projections:

  • 2025 Military Expenditure: Russia’s planned military spending for 2025 is around $170-$172 billion, accounting for approximately 8% of its GDP. [1]
  • Direct Military Spending: Some estimates place Russia’s direct military spending on the war at $132 billion or more by the end of 2024. [2]
  • Total Direct War Cost: One source indicates the total direct costs of the war for Russia have exceeded $450 billion, though this is a broader figure encompassing all direct expenses. [3]
  • GDP Losses: Beyond direct military costs, Russia has also incurred significant losses to its GDP as a result of the war, with estimates for 2022 alone falling between $81 billion and $104 billion. [2]

Context and Broader Impacts: [4]

  • Economic Impact: The war has led to Russia’s focus on a “war economy” that prioritizes military spending, which drives short-term growth but undermines long-term economic health.
  • Labour Shortages: The increased militarization of the workforce contributes to severe labor shortages.
  • Inflation: Wage growth in Russia has outpaced productivity, fueling inflation.
  • Sustainability: This approach creates a narrow and brittle economic foundation, making Russia’s long-term economic trajectory unsustainable.

The slings and arrows of outrageous slurs — “vile ignoramus” has become my latest favorite — appear never to reach the armored, delusional, malignantly narcissistic, and unreachable Ill Trumpolini (another fave). His realm: mafia realpolitik along the lines of “your money or your wife” — or both (plus other “property”) according to Jeffrey Epstein via assorted reportage. This week, he predictably added to his ignominious reputation by offering Putin everything asked for: expanded land assets for Russia; the submission of Ukraine to Russia; the abandonment of Ukraine by NATO to Russia.

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

Positively Orwellian: Comment Responding to Claim that the Arab Assault on Israel in 1948 Had Not Intended Annihilation

“Revisionism” is the most contemptible path that power takes to abet theft and hide shame by attempting to alter public perception of past events.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
