Israel isn’t doing anything TO the Palestinians but trying to help them with economic development (Israel is an employer and trading partner), education (Israel’s universities accept Palestinians), health care (the system frequently steps in to provide services unavailable in Palestinian hospitals), legal assistance and advocacy — amazingly, Israelis are more free to advocate on behalf of the refugees than are the refugees under the the watch of Fatah and Hamas.

Check out Israel’s own far left.

The thematic “get the Jews” / “get Israel” is a part of language behavior and not corresponding with any political reality — it’s a reality in the head, rule based, and perception fixing. Some part flows down from Soviet cant about “American imperialist ambitions” and some about Muhammad’s statements promoting the superiority (by divine edict) of Islam along with the division and subjugation (to dhimmi) of Jews and Christians, as bogus a play as Soviet imperialist ambitions in Afghanistan.

Israel (and the Jews) keep getting in the way of barbarians, dictators, and fanatics.

The truth is the refugees of 1948 wouldn’t be so had the Arabs accepted Palestinian statehood at the time, but the thought of a Jewish state ( on purchased land sparsely populated) would seem to have been perceived as an affront to Islamic ambition, and there proceeded from that three wars (or more) of annihilation against the “Zionist entity”, which won each, claimed territory, enfranchised its immediate Arab Christian and Muslim population, and struggled on to maintain the possibility of a Palestinian state responsibly governed. For its troubles, which includes the evacuation of Jews from Gaza in a “Land for Peace” deal, it primarily provided Hamas and Company a rocket base (8,000 received before “Cast Lead”).

Islam’s best demonstration project today is burning itself up in Syria between fighting a brutal dictatorship, a cause with which only Putin and the Ayatollah would disagree — and possibly only for so long as fewer than 7 percent of his constituency can get around RT and read English freely — and fighting one another, and that to the extent that al-Qaeda as an organization seems to have repudiated ISIL as an affiliate — and there’s more nonsense and betrayal going on back there with money and arms today.

Anti-Semitism founded in the glorious dream of magical Islamic secession just doesn’t work, and governance in Islam — Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, Algeria (has had problems this past year as well) is a mess.

In Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood discovered intolerance toward itself inside of a single year’s foray into power.

Should Egyptians be or feel trapped between authoritarian personalities and systems?

Of course not.

Nor should Syrians, who in essence have no army defending their reasonable interests — rather Syria’s malignant narcissists (different talk, same walk on both sides) continue taking the country down brick by brick, and whether by barrel bomb or truck bomb hardly matters.

Perhaps I should think about it before hitting the WordPress “Publish” button.

Okay — a few additional comments . . . .

Egyptians with modern businesses, interests, and investments needs must have a security system guarantying their freedom to sustain their efforts in relation to them.

Syrians perhaps need an army that is not all about itself and its immediate lines of affiliation and alliance, but rather about the interests of the constituents of the land.

A great religion or a strong one affords hope, faith, and solace inclusively, not exclusively.  The continuous perception of division — and take that further: trivial division! — drives the Islamic Small Wars.

The want of exclusive favor may do that.

Ukraine – “Russia and The Jews” – Dueling Attitudes

It was a country where the late actor Bogdan Stupka could move audiences by playing Tevye the Dairyman—in Ukrainian. In 2004, during the Orange Revolution—triggered by protests against a fraudulent election “won” by Viktor Yanukovych—my Ukrainian friends demonstrated alongside Boris Naumovich, an octogenarian veteran of the Red Army with whom I practiced speaking Yiddish. Now, a decade later, an equally diverse coalition has turned out for the past three months again to protest Yanukovych, who over the weekend was ousted from the presidency he took over in 2010, and who appears to have fled to the Crimea.

It takes as much or more time to compile quotations and reference as it may to reflect and speak, so for this scraping post, I may say very little: Ukraine has come to the new dawn riven with internal conflicts about being Ukrainian with but one exception: being modern.

In the modern ethos, and would that I would have influence in it, those five bulwarks to the left-and-top count: Compassion • Empathy • Humility • Inclusion • Integrity.

Notably, if quite accidentally, my web surf took me first to “Ukraine, revolution, anti-Semitism” and then to “Ukraine, revolution, Jewish”, which somehow brought up another how-did-I-ever-miss-this encounter with a proper noun: “Viktor Pinchuk”.

Never heard of him.

(Quick: name Putin’s top ten oligarchs)!

I didn’t think so (but am nonetheless prepared to be surprised by the odd persnickety personality).

Pinchuk and the Jewish community of about 200,000 in Ukraine are not “Ukraine”, but they are certainly a fine and legitimate part of it, and Ukraine, rather like Hungary, hasn’t a soul more pure than any other of the world’s states, but then too, it has its language and languages are distinct and matched to culture, so whether Christian or Jewish or Muslim, capitalist or communist, far left or far right or somewhere between, Ukrainians have a common investment in land and language, a true meta-ethnicity adorned by differences.

Statement of Victor Pinchuk

Victor Pinchuk said: “A peaceful solution must be found, it is imperative to refrain from the use of force and find a compromise. Ukraine since its independence has avoided bloodshed. We must return to this tradition immediately. From this minute, this is the responsibility of everyone – those in power, the opposition, civil society, business. It is time for all sides to take courageous steps towards compromise that they may not yet have been ready to take even this morning. For each of us, love for Ukraine must be immeasurably more important than any other feelings and interests.”

Corey Gil Shuster (CGS): Do you think you live in an Apartheid state?

Ibrahim: This country is an advanced country. It proves itself totally. It’s progressive in all ways. If you look at the highways, the hospitals, it couldn’t be any better.

CGS: As an Arab Israeli Palestinian, do you think the treatment you receive on the street or at hospitals is different than if you were a Jew?

Ibrahim: It’s amazing, I was in the hospital for a year and a half and I was like their son, they treated me so well.

CGS: So you don’t feel separate from Jews?

Ibrahim: No way. No way. I was treated so well.

I’ve posted the video farther down in this post. The interview takes place about 12 minutes into the clip.

The free world has endured more than six decades of related nonsense, as have, and God only knows, the refugees of 1948 and their descendants.

However, political, religious, and secular intellectual poisons course through cultural systems on that scale.  Few of such misdirect attention quite the way that Jew hate does, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the political families, cliques, and movements that rely on it for whipping the passions of deluded, gullible, subjugated, and weak.

Arab leaders and states have penned a substantial portion of the refugees of wars against Israel in camps in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Egypt.

Jews do not maintain such camps.

In the preoccupied territories, perhaps today more heavily contested for complete Jewish-majority Israeli sovereignty but nonetheless home to Arabs, Christian and Muslim, Israel and the free world have been waiting through the same decades for Fatah and Hamas to produce governance meeting contemporary standards in elections, law, and in human rights.

So far: not much luck.

Syria – “Moderate” Jew Hate

______

By way of western media, I had been given the impression that Syria’s revolution included a beleaguered but moderate fighting force.  With that impression in mind, I have begun following “Free Syrian Media” which puts through the Syrian National Coalition voice.

Elsewhere on this blog, I have suggested that the Syrian People simply have not had an army working in their interest.

Bashar al-Assad has had an army working in his interest.

Islamic zealots appear to have as many armies as they have themselves working in their interests (please, do not drag God into this horror).

However, the Syrian People have been either abandoned or punished between armies, anything but defended.

*

The monolithic minds of the American anti-Jihad (in their heads: all Muslims bad) have not overlooked similarities in battlefield barbarism, e.g., see Bare Naked Islam’s “‘Moderate’ Free Syrian Army rebels sent a selfie to Obama, their best friend and support in the U.S.'” for an example of that.  However, the zero-change in the flow down from programmatic Baathist anti-Semitism signals how little interest the Syrian opposition may have in producing a full out regime-changing, culture altering, and permanent revolutionary redemption and rescue of the Syrian People.

For Arabs, Zionism and Jewishness are one and the same thing.

  • The influence of Nazi ideals and prejudices on Arab nationalism and the paranoid attitudes of the region’s leaders effectively stymie any chances of reconciliation between the two peoples.
  •  Historical evidences show that the much-praised racial harmony of Al-andalus has been exaggerated for political purposes.
  • The negative image of Jews in the Quran has been deliberately misinterpreted in order to keep hatred of Jews alive among Arabs today.

Careers are made of the study of anti-Semitism, and I’m not going to load this page for that.

However, whether because Mohammad said a few things, or perhaps because Islam must prevail (and Christians and Jews are just so, you know, 5th Century), or it just plain feels good to feel hate and have a convenient target for it — whatever the cause of the illness — it has to go.

For the keys to letting go, there’s a pair around here in the contemplation of language uptake and related cultural programming (how we learn to listen) and scripting (what we learn to say).

*

The United States and its principal European and Arab allies have agreed on a unified way of providing Syrian rebel groups with aid, classifying them into those who should receive arms supplies and other assistance, those who are ineligible because of clear extremist ties, and those whose eligibility requires further discussion, according to U.S. and allied officials.

U.S., allies agree on standards for which opposition groups in Syria will receive aid – The Washington Post – 2/21/2014.

I wonder if those standards might include any indices for anti-Zionist/anti-Semitic cant and the continued and Assad-oriented desire to damage or destroy the Jewish State and refuse the influence of the west while enjoying shipments of its war fighting equipage and materiel.

First of all let me point out, and I’m fuly aware of the deliberate digression on my part here, that I’m the first to say that Israel and its people, like any other nation, has and deserves every right to live in peace and harmony and to benefit from the years of hardships it has been through as well as hard work to bring about the actual benefits that it is receiving now. As a matter of fact, I consider Israel and its people a great role model for other nations in terms of what it takes for a people to take such huge steps in all fields of life. I also believe that the entire world deserves the same and had it not been for various disasters, among them wars, and had they been left in peace so that they can deal with their own domestic problems effectively, we would have had a much better world. I think Israel can use its incredible experience, wisdom, technological advances, also its incredible human resources in order to help its immediate neighbours to see the light rather than continuing with a conflict that is taking innocent lives on both sides to no positive end!I beliebve that not a single Israeli child nor Palestinian, nor anyone else for that matter, should be a victim of this useless conflict that has been going on for so long! Israel definitely has as much right to water as anyone else and it is also great that it is sensitive enough to let others to benefit from it generously. My ultimate wish is to see all nations living in peace and harmony, using their various resources in order to improve their lives for there is enough for us all on this planet of ours to share.

The author, Tanit Nima Tinat, holds a degree in Stage Acting and Dramatic Art from Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, United Kingdom as well as a Master of Arts in Comparative Literature: Ancient Greek, Latin, English from the University of California at Berkeley.

My Comments

As my father may have said, “We had some words.”

However, we may have landed on the same page, a liberal one, defined by urges toward magnanimity and righteousness.

The laboratory that is the middle east conflict affords plenty of opportunity for viewing how expectations nulling the intent to destroy Israel and the Jews and preserving the opportunity for the resident refugees of 1948 actually contributes to the promise of a real, a reliable, autonomy, dignity, and prosperity.  As others govern themselves, they may too, and they may expect to do that to standards to which others adhere in mutual regard.

End the preoccupation, says I.

Real Israeli suzerainty is not and has never been an option.

That theme on which I hammer, “malignant narcissism”, gets in there in the patterns of dependence, skimming, and taxation deployed by Fatah and Hamas governing elements, each in their own way.

The best countermeasure: widespread external comprehension of a whole accurate, clear, and complete cultural, geographical, historical, and psychological story.

We don’t make it up.

We don’t deny shameful passages.

We don’t deny creditable passages either.

We look at it together, finally, or look at them together, so many conflicts extant, and that spells the beginning of the end of those artificially provoked and sustained for the ends cherished by the most narcissistic and venal of persons.

______

Research analysts may drown in human richness and wealth of information attending any conflict, and when one has done that get a book out of it; however, as I began my journey through the English-language editions of foreign press, I hadn’t interest in Israel and the middle east conflict.  In fact, egregiously naive at the dawn in 2006-2007 (new home built computer; high bandwidth Internet; time on my hands — that’s important — curiosity intact, and blogging software made ready) I was indignant about dumping off the coast of Somalia and had wanted Greenpeace to do something about it!

So fate has provided me with other contributing paths to this point, and this point, so far, is very good: the world in social media has produced a new global political intelligentsia, and we’re here chatyping with one another, and, separately, taking stock of older histories, accessing every avenue of knowledge available to redetermine and re-frame our various cultural, ethnic, and even linguistic locations in the world.

The nascent international system its many versions of Grinch: Ayatollah Khamenei, for example, has racked up serious money beneath this position and moves it around worldwide (e.g., reference: Iran: The leading state sponsor of int’l terrorism | JPost | Israel News – 3/18/2012); Russian President Vladimir Putin knows that while Internet penetration has been pretty good in Russia, less than seven percent of the population speaks English (Wikipedia suggests 5.84 percent), and that leaves him in good shape to frame the news through state-controlled Russian media.  But in the global schemes in which technology abets trade and moves money, the same technology-enabled intelligentsia, albeit with struggle against repression, may own itself most of all.

* * *

(In its own way in politics, broadly dispersed national languages form the last broad rivers and impassable mountains defending cultural isolation, and so lend themselves to the totalitarian ends of dictators who really can and do close off the world around their constituents by shutting down external channels and nodes).

The death of common sense and good taste in post communist Hungary

It seems it is not enough for the national curriculum to include the antisemitic rantings of Albert Wass and Jozsef Nyiro, or for busts of wartime leader and Hitler ally Miklos Horthy to be erected, or for Hungary’s new constitution to hold the government blameless for the Holocaust, or for government revisionist historians to rewrite one of the darkest chapters in Hungary’s 1100-year-old history.

Epigram

Hillel the Elder

"That which is distasteful to thee do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and study."

"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? If not now, when?"

"Whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world."

Oriana Fallaci
"Whether it comes from a despotic sovereign or an elected president, from a murderous general or a beloved leader, I see power as an inhuman and hateful phenomenon...I have always looked on disobedience toward the oppressive as the only way to use the miracle of having been born."

Talmud 7:16 as Quoted by Rishon Rishon in 2004
Qohelet Raba, 7:16

אכזרי סוף שנעשה אכזרי במקום רחמן

Kol mi shena`asa rahaman bimqom akhzari Sof shena`asa akhzari bimqom rahaman

All who are made to be compassionate in the place of the cruel In the end are made to be cruel in the place of the compassionate.

More colloquially translated: "Those who are kind to the cruel, in the end will be cruel to the kind."

Abraham Isaac Kook

"The purely righteous do not complain about evil, rather they add justice. They do not complain about heresy, rather they add faith. They do not complain about ignorance, rather they add wisdom." From the pages of Arpilei Tohar.

Heinrich Heine
"Where books are burned, in the end people will be burned." -- From Almansor: A Tragedy (1823).

Simon Wiesenthal
Remark Made in the Ballroom of the Imperial Hotel, Vienna, Austria on the occasion of His 90th Birthday: "The Nazis are no more, but we are still here, singing and dancing."

Maimonides
"Truth does not become more true if the whole world were to accept it; nor does it become less true if the whole world were to reject it."

"The risk of a wrong decision is preferable to the terror of indecision."

Douglas Adams
"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" Epigram appearing in the dedication of Richard Dawkins' The GOD Delusion.

Thucydides
"The Nation that makes a great distinction between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools."

Milan Kundera
"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting."

Malala Yousafzai
“The terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born.”

Tanit Nima Tinat
"Who could die of love?"

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

Positively Orwellian: Comment Responding to Claim that the Arab Assault on Israel in 1948 Had Not Intended Annihilation

“Revisionism” is the most contemptible path that power takes to abet theft and hide shame by attempting to alter public perception of past events.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
