FTAC – On Popular Democracies

Real democracies work: they educate their children, not just some children; they elicit political and policy opinion from the floor of the culture on up to high office; adult voting is universal and enfranchisement and empowerment and inclusion in other ways are continuously sought. While it’s somewhat true that “democracies get the government they deserve,” a great democracy strives to produce an even greater people by way of encouraging both community and personal development to the extent possible in freedom.

As regards “Hamafia’s” elections, I recall blood in the streets in 2006 as signifying they kind of “democracy” Hamas invests in, and much to its own benefit: Khaled Mashaal and Ismail Haniyeh are billionaires today, not that “their people” — one wonder what beside intimidation and payoffs keep the same “their people” — benefit from that accumulation of wealth. Ditto for most Russians off to the side of Putin’s “vertical of power” — or on the streets outside of Erdogan’s new “White Palace”. That list grows long.

 Addendum – Same Conversation

They should lament the “loss of liberties” because the very small things, i.e., how to dress, presage the very large and dark things: murder and tyranny.

When the Jews left Pharaoh, they must have not only been responding to the tyrant’s behavior but the human urge to abandon that kind of power and live elsewhere. In the Torah, the Jews are joined in their exodus by a “mixed multitude”. Now, as then, some “get it” but the God that makes the spinning cloud and parts the waters of the Red Sea with its wind may be less obvious in evidence. The secret: it must have been in the humanity of the Jews and that “mixed multitude” to reject Pharaoh, leave that course, and never look back.

India has joined Israel in defense and trade, and relations have been on the upswing at least into December. I should think the attack in Mumbai not easily forgotten in that regard.

What comes up here in Shia-Israel and what is thematic in other relationships is that yesterday’s social reality can be ejected and not put in front of all of us. We can take it apart, and, from time to time, we have to take apart some assumptions and beliefs and move forward of them — leave the despotic, make a miraculous crossing, and wander around lost but within the terrain of a greater faith and humanity.

Hidden behind this one-sided presentation of a conversation: the cylinder of Cyrus the Great, a first humanist statement of human values and rights.  The suggestion: Khamenei wants the esteem of the Arab world, and he has gone against the grain of Persia to get it.  Moreover, his regime represents what is despotic, piratical, and tyrannical in history, and the regime has made him in that regard a modern “pharaoh” a cult personality to be likened unto . . . God, but his regime comes up short by way of Evin Prison, the suffering in Syria (including the suffering of the Palestinian Yarmouk Camp at the hands of the Khamenei-backed Assad regime), and its billius rhetoric about the “Zionist regime”, without which even the poorest of Iran’s constituents might just see their leadership for the enterprise it has become.

Althought Vice Ambassador Deek addresses the Palestinians at about 10:30 on the clip, what he has to say of the middle east and its migrations sets the stage for that.

Modern standards may link to a better informed perception of demarcations between childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. It hasn’t anything to do with affluence: we just know better. Cultures that maintain an earliest onset standard (or worse) may well be regarded as backwards and, frankly, stupid (uninformed) or stubborn or both. As with “honor killing”, we may recognize the anthropological and cultural evolution of the social behavior (we’re a wild species, after all, and we invent ourselves and pass on our invention through generations), but we don’t have to validate it or otherwise fit it into modern terms.

The topic was childhood marriages and related abuses, and the above paragraph was my thread-killer response.

While worldviews needs must shift with boundary changes and knowledge in the world, evolving cultural self-concept may involve selective discarding of no longer useful assumptions or habits of mind.  Why hold on to what is not true?  Or to what failed to work?  Or what is not working?  Or what is needlessly, uselessly dangerous or painful to another?

None sail without casting off lines and leaving old ports of call.

From another thread in response to not being dictated to by the U.S.:

Independence in curiosity and thought may not be dictated. Those attributes would seem within the province of the adventurous and bright across cultures and across time. However, exploration, illumination, insight, surprise, and vision may may be bound together in the complete intellectual tour.

When God (being God) introduces Eve to the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (via the Snake, who is also God’s creature) and awakens her to human awareness, self-awareness, and conscience — yeah, well she had to share THAT with Adam, poor fellow, considering what comes next in instruction), He’s careful (through the snake’s mouth) to conceal the presence of that other tree (by not mentioning it).

Knowledge is funny: how much do we really want to know, how soon, toward what end?

As issues may be parsed into dimensions and dimensions further defined, observed, explicated, the one or two central dimensions that cross all of the lines of the Islamic Small Wars are (imho) 1) Integrity Universally and its complement 2) Loyalty Selectively. A lot of things slip into the columns beneath those headers to then show up in events on the ground.

We may not see or hear the conversations that led to the murder of three Israelis and shortly thereafter an Arab boy — but we know somebody’s “holding out”. Similar behavior in business we often sanction as private and proprietary, but in politics undermining peaceful processes and whipping up crowds, the lying should get much less respect and, in fact, the general public must become more cognizant of processes below deck.

I skip down to the base when I think about “conflict, culture, language, and psychology” and the power of legacy in poetry to organize communities. That dives beneath the obscured layers of information but also lands one in the areas detached principle and theory — pure rather than applied research or thought.

For this thread, and having to shut down here for other obligations plus the Sabbath, I would suggest that those most in want and in need of the next new world may have to give up some old thoughts to climb into it, to come forward of positions, look over what we know of ourselves in myriad dimensions and ways and engineer to obtain for most of humanity improvements in (another of my terms of art) “qualities of living” — from cash supply and distribution x N-pop. x Area-Sq. to psychological and spiritual appreciation of the experience of living.

That said, conditions are pretty shitty for millions of souls, and some are getting attention in peace — anyone wish to include me in a peace and development project, let me know — but too many are suffering in the shadows of crime, criminal governance, and war. A prayer for those in line with “Tikkun Olam” and hope to continue doing what we do by bringing more to light and to mind and to heart universally.

Epigram

Hillel the Elder

"That which is distasteful to thee do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and study."

"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? If not now, when?"

"Whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world."

Oriana Fallaci
"Whether it comes from a despotic sovereign or an elected president, from a murderous general or a beloved leader, I see power as an inhuman and hateful phenomenon...I have always looked on disobedience toward the oppressive as the only way to use the miracle of having been born."

Talmud 7:16 as Quoted by Rishon Rishon in 2004
Qohelet Raba, 7:16

אכזרי סוף שנעשה אכזרי במקום רחמן

Kol mi shena`asa rahaman bimqom akhzari Sof shena`asa akhzari bimqom rahaman

All who are made to be compassionate in the place of the cruel In the end are made to be cruel in the place of the compassionate.

More colloquially translated: "Those who are kind to the cruel, in the end will be cruel to the kind."

"The risk of a wrong decision is preferable to the terror of indecision."

"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" Epigram appearing in the dedication of Richard Dawkins' The GOD Delusion.

Thucydides
"The Nation that makes a great distinction between its scholars and its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards and its fighting done by fools."

Milan Kundera
"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting."

Malala Yousafzai
“The terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born.”

Tanit Nima Tinat
"Who could die of love?"

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

Positively Orwellian: Comment Responding to Claim that the Arab Assault on Israel in 1948 Had Not Intended Annihilation

“Revisionism” is the most contemptible path that power takes to abet theft and hide shame by attempting to alter public perception of past events.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
