Left defenseless, Iraqi minorities often perceived their own Sunni Muslim neighbors in the area of ISIS’ advance as more of a threat than ISIS foreign fighters, Talabany stated.  As these minorities would recount, “our neighbors came to the Christian family and said, ‘you have lived next to us for 100 years and so for that reason I am going to give you and your family ten minutes to go and I won’t kill you.’”  She noted Yazidi ISIS sex slaves often knew their captors and dismissed trying to “re-integrate people with their torturers,” while segregation often helped pacify refugee camps.  Benoka asked of treacherous neighbors “how could we continue living in peace with them.”

Lede:

Hamas infiltrated a large international aid organization operating in Gaza and redirected tens of millions of dollars – 60 percent – of the organization’s budget to its “military” wing, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) announced on Thursday, following an investigation that lasted almost two months.

The World Vision organization, which operates in 100 countries and employs 46,000 people, fell victim to a complex Hamas takeover scheme, a senior Shin Bet source said, adding that Hamas’s armed wing stole $7.2 million a year from the budget, which was supposed to pay for food, humanitarian assistance, and aid programs for disabled children, and channeled the funds to buy weapons, build attack tunnels, and to other preparations for war with Israel.

“World Vision’s cumulative operating budget in Gaza for the past ten years was approximately $22.5 million, which makes the alleged amount of up to $50 million being diverted hard to reconcile,” the statement read.

The NGO has suspended its operations in Gaza.

http://www.algemeiner.com/2014/08/07/conclusive-proof-that-hamas-uses-palestinians-as-human-shields/ – 8/7/2014:

On August 5, the Israeli Army released copies of an official Hamas manual that it discovered in the Shuja’iya neighborhood of Gaza, where one of the fiercest battles of the war was fought.

It’s titled “Urban Warfare,” and it was produced by Hamas’s Shuja’iya Brigade. The manual includes detailed instructions on how to use the civilians of Gaza against Israel. It explains how because of Israel’s concern about civilian casualties, Hamas can use the “presence of civilians” to its military advantage. Having civilians nearby causes the Israelis “(1) Problems with opening fire; (2) Problems in controlling the civilian population during operations and afterward; (3) Assurance of supplying medical care to civilians who need it.”

The “Urban Warfare” manual also emphasizes the benefits of damage to civilian property: “The destruction of civilian homes: This increases the hatred of the citizens towards the attackers [the IDF] and increases their gathering [support] around the city defenders (resistance forces[i.e. Hamas]).”

FTAC – Fast Wrap on the Ahmed Mohamed Story

Ahmed Mohamed, lawsuit

Ahmed Mohamed brought an “invention” to school, showed it off several times, and finally made it beep in a classroom. In America’s “See something? Say something” culture, the teacher felt obligated to confiscate and report the box. The rest is history.

Ahmed’s father is now trying to prove that the city and school district have made, as a racial and religious class, black Muslims fair game for state-based discrimination.

No one knows WHY Ahmed chose to build a clock — or “timing device” — but all recognize that if the same thing had been armed with plastic explosive (very small, very potent material), we’d be chatyping about some other kind of story. As the state’s writ demands the same protect its citizens, sending / bringing a box jammed with electronics into the classroom raises questions and compels the making of some choices.

Hoax bomb?

Maybe it was.

Maybe it wasn’t.

Where should the public set its sensitivity to threat?

When Ahmed set off the clock’s alarm, it interrupted – or disrupted — the classroom. The teacher took the box and alerted the next official.

This small Texas incident took off with the help of the local NAACP leader Anthony Bond and in a matter of days became both a cause celebre and reviled part of the history of terrorism and related threat in the U.S. and around the world.

My partner in conversation didn’t know whether to laugh or cry over news of the lawsuit brought by Ahmed Mohamed and his father, Mohamed Elhassan, against the “Irving Independent School District; Daniel Cummings, In His Individual Capacity; and the City of Irving” (August 8, 2016 – URL links to PDF of the filing).

Not to summarize the suit here, readers may nonetheless note the charge of institutional racism against “black Muslims” as inseparable from the suit.

"Clock Boy", Ahmed Mohamed story, Islam in America, politics

The Internet is his refuge — and his attacker. He reads every story and long, rambling conspiracy theory about him. Countless blogs and videos have been dedicated to proving Ahmed’s clock was just a Radio Shack clock he put in a new box. (It was partially made of Radio Shack parts, but the design was all his own, he says.) Others insist that this was all a stunt masterminded by Mohamed to get attention. (“He can’t plan the reaction. And why would he want me to get arrested?” Ahmed says.) Still more have proclaimed that the Mohameds are terrorist sympathizers because they once owned a company called Twin Towers Transportation. (They did own a company by that name, because their offices were housed in a Dallas office building called the Twin Towers.)

Contrera, Jessica.  “A year ago, Ahmed Mohamed became ‘Clock Boy.’  Now, he can’t escape that moment.”  The Washington Post, August 2, 2016.

Added to https://conflict-backchannels.com/2015/09/25/ahmeds-clock-in-a-box-exploitation-of-a-stereotype-for-political-gain-says-arab-american-professor/

Relevant to https://conflict-backchannels.com/coins-and-other-terms/shimmer/

Many themes attend the Ahmed Mohamed story involving the clock in a Vaultz pencil box.  From NAACP activist Julian Bond, the first to “field” the incident, to Ahmed’s photo-op with Sudan’s infamous President Bashir, the most troublesome may be the ambiguity.

Why, among the many possibilities in electronics, “invent” a clock, i.e. a time device or, potentially, a timing device?

Why after having shown it to one teacher, who advised not showing it off again, show it again and again and again and finally plug it in and have the alarm go off?

Whatever the truth may have been, including the possibility that there had been no one truth, so many mixed motives attending human behavior at times, it’s sure to be covered in favor-currying trouble-avoiding explanations.

Credit Washington Post writer Jessica Contrera for going the distance with “Twin Towers Transportation”, perhaps settling one concern of the “Islamophobes” — or not (why choose / search out a “Twin Towers” property?).

And on this goes.

Language matters, and whether we indulge in the many layers of poetry, including punning, or technical empirical observation, peace, whether found in religion or in reason, needs must find its anchors in eventual consistency in the employment and reflection of symbols and their interpretation.  That Texas law had already provisions for a “hoax bomb” tells how difficult discernment have become.

Of the virtues listed in the left sidebar of this blog, I would rank the last as first: integrity.

At the end of the video, Daniel Pipes mentions activity on America’s campuses.  Readers interested in that activity may wish to visit Campus Watch or familiarize themselves with the organization’s “Professors to Avoid” list.

Not much has changed in the post-Soviet Left — New Old Now Old Far Out and Lost — just add Black (see blackforpalestine.com).

BackChannels declines to add “Black” to “Syndicate Red Brown Green” for not wishing to lend amplification to the splinter community now updating and reenacting (in the post-Affirmative Action world) scenes from the 1960s and 1970s.

The Soviet fully dissolved on December 26, 1991 and former KGB Colonel Putin has effective transitioned his police and Party privileged — in the architecture of power — into “State Capitalism” by way of his centralized power.  On this blog, the term “21st Century Neo-Feudalism” attempts to touch on the atmosphere of the revanchist state.  Scholar Agnia Grigas employs a similar term (similarly recognizing the revanchist state): “Neo-Imperial Russia”).

Basically, Russia is capitalist and and has its fleet of oligarchs to prove it.

What contributed mightily to birthing the Far Left just isn’t there, but the anti-west quality and the sustaining of dictatorship – absolute power – remains, and it seems just that kind of power obsesses the Far Left.

Be that as it may, the reflection of anger — another term on this blog may apply: “Paranoid Delusional Reflection of Motivation” — that targets the “social capitalism” of the United States and other open democracies does indeed seem to bind militant (Black) Red Brown and Green interests.

FTAC – Regarding Candidate Trump and Islamic Extremism

I am certain that Donald J. Trump doesn’t know the region between Islamism and Islamic Reform as he should, but he knows how to be thorough in assessing and working through a challenge, and he’ll come up to speed on an issue that is essentially about extremism and incitement PLUS the amplification of similar qualities in others, i.e., with every “Allahu Akbar” attack, a portion of the recipients elevate their response — and Putin, who has set out to destabilize the west, loves it!

You know what . . . let’s keep in mind that the greater framework for Islamic extremism and terrorism is in fact the Cold War and its shadows — the Phantom of the Soviet, state sponsor of terrorism and proxy wars, lives on in structure in a revanchist neo-imperial Russia. The sooner everyone sees that, the sooner we’ll get through this together and come out with still modern, secular, pluralist, humanist, and amazingly free democracies that work.

I think the demonizing slung from both sides in this ugly election season skews our perception, but of the two, I prefer his straight talk, and I think he knows he’s a tenderfoot among politicians and needs to come up to speed, fast!

Also, again, the framework for the “islamic Small Wars” — we’ve all seen a lot of change — Arab Springs to the failed coup in Turkey — in the past decade, but it takes reading and research to see the same wrapped in the themes of the Cold War.

We’re going to be voting character plus the character of the party associated with the election’s winner.

This bothers me:

http://www.blackforpalestine.com/

it doesn’t bother because there are black people struggling to make lives for themselves and there are refugees whose families were caught and abandoned between armies in 1948. It bothers me because it links back to the Soviet Era and the mentality of Russia’s Communist Party and hypocrisy in promising paradise and brutalizing millions for the privileges of party apparatchik.

Here’s the reminder of the relationship between Moscow and the formation of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. https://conflict-backchannels.com/…/quote-manipulation…/

Tell me, after 68 years, how much the leaders of the PLO / PA and Hamas shown compassion or empathy with regard to the lives of the refugees of 1948?

Clinton / Trump – Washington Insider / Washington Outsider — it’s not going to make any difference if WE don’t find our way back to the center of the aisle — “Moderate Conservatives / Moderate Liberals”.

21st Century Neo-Feudalism, article review, counterterrorism, extremism, Islamic extremism, Islamist extremism, Katharine Gorka, language strategies, political extremism, Syndicate Red Brown Green

In October 2014, Katharine Gorka of the Council on Global Security published a white paper on how language was developed and finessed by the American government to cultivate the moderate and discourage extremists.  While noting “The conscious effort not to insult “peaceful” Muslims and at the same time not confer legitimacy on violent Muslims,” she settles on a critique of “Social Movement Theory and Counter-Terrorism Policy,” which turns out also a criticism of the Obama Administration’s approach to “Allahu Akbar” terrorist attacks up to the approximate date of publication.

Here is an excerpt from the thesis of the work:

What are the implications of the Social Movement paradigm for U.S. counter-terrorism policy? First and foremost, it dismisses the ideas and beliefs that inspire
terrorists to act. It reduces their actions from religiously or ideologically inspired acts of will to merely reflexive reaction, little more than an involuntary response to abject circumstances. In this way it also serves to legitimize the actions of extremists, deeming them not as the unjust and horrific acts that they are but as the rational and justified response to negative circumstances, whether they be imperialism, colonialism, tyranny, or poverty.

To be clear, social movement theory can provide valuable and instructive insights into how groups form and behave, but as a unitary and all-encompassing lens through which to view Islamic terrorism and extremism, it dooms the United
States to strategic failure.

Not surprisingly, this single issue is at the heart of the current debate. Today, in the United States, the most important point of contention over U.S. counter-terrorism policy is its deliberate rejection of the ideological component, of the way in which Islam itself drives or inspires extremism or terrorism.

A large number of authors and analysts, as well as lawmakers, have criticized the systemic failure of the U.S. government to address the ideological component of Islamist terrorism.

This paper argues that the roots of that failure lie here, in the application of social movement theory to Islamic activism. If one looks closely at the policy documents that emerged from Obama’s National Security Staff around this time, one can see the influence of social movement theory as well as the criticisms these documents elicited.

Gorka, Katharine C.  “The Flawed Science Behind America’s Counter-Terrorism Strategy.” (PDF) White paper, p. 11.  The Council on Global Security, October 2014.

As a history, Gorka’s paper covers the many strategies that have been applied to detected and quelling Islamist violence — or should that be “Islamist”?

BackChannels has dropped the quotation marks for at least that much.

While dismissing the “social movement paradigm” as a foundation for counterterrorism strategy, Gorka may have overlooked other contributing variables, much including messianic-narcissistic drives in Islamist leaders and the ranks that support them, and behind that — basically taking place earlier in the formation of personality — the “narcissistic mortification” that drive compulsive wishes and actions beyond normal boundaries in belligerence and the importance of the centrality of control to proponents.

While making the “call the spade a spade argument” — ” . . . language must be used that accurately identifies and distinguishes the enemy, for example, the Global Jihadist Movement” — Gorka may have missed the extremism developing in the Red “comrade networks” of the anti-Semitic International Solidarity / Palestinian Solidarity movements and in such “Brown” and “New Nationalist” spheres as the right-wing Jobbik in Hungary and now so many name-your-nation “defense leagues” springing up in response to the goad of Islamist terrorist events.

BackChannels best guess for “CoH” — “Cessation of Hostilities”.

That “weakness invites aggression” or “peace through strength” should be concepts well known, but even so, the circumstances in total want for someone’s “good gamble”.

Are we there yet?

For NATO, the headlines from countercoup Turkey are not looking so good: NYT: “With Army in Disarray, a Pillar of Modern Turkey Lies Broken”; Reuters: “Turkish military a fractured force after attempted coup”; Fox: “Turkish military faces overhaul after failed coup”.

It was good to have won the war and the peace in 1945, but that was 66 years ago, and most of that Great Generation that fought are today permanently at rest, and what the present generation — raised on football and Kardashians — has on its plate in Moscow, Damascus, Tehran, Pyongyang, Beijing, and a few elsewheres are the kind of “Great Leaders” capable of producing what has been witnessed in Syrian and what has been recorded in the histories of their own states in their rise to power.

Addendum – August 1, 2016

Gutman, Roy.  “As Obama Dithers, Syrian Rebels in Aleppo Brace for Putin’s Onslaught.”  The Daily Beast, August 2, 2016:

In several days of phone conversations with Moscow, Kerry was unable to obtain clarifications of how the new decision was compatible with the talks he’s been holding with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

European diplomats said Kerry’s current initiative, which involved a highly controversial concession to share intelligence with Russia and to conduct joint and coordinated attacks on Jabhat al-Nusra, could collapse in short order.

According to Assad’s political opponents, that is not the worst of it.

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism
