America v. Iran, Donald Trump, Mafia Don, Medieval v. Modern, Pale Phantom of the Soviet, Vladimir Putin

By Ai La Mar & J. S. Oppenheim

Present State of U.S. Defense and Security Posture The conflict landscape has shifted significantly since the massive U.S. and Israeli kinetic operations of Operation Epic Fury in February 2026. Following the collapse of the summer ceasefires, the operational environment has settled into a dangerous, asymmetrical war of attrition.

  • Maritime Deterrence and Chokepoints: The U.S. continues to enforce a rigorous naval blockade coupled with a sweeping economic isolation campaign. In response, Iran’s primary kinetic leverage remains focused on the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has maintained a steady harassment of commercial transit, with recent reports indicating three tankers caught fire after striking mines in the strait just days ago.
  • Election-Window Security: The U.S. Defense Department is currently on high alert, warning allies of potential Iranian retaliatory strikes aimed at disrupting the upcoming U.S. midterm elections.
  • Tactical Restraint: Despite heightened tensions, the White House reportedly blocked a push by Israeli leadership in October to launch a new wave of preemptive strikes against Iran, seeking to prevent a massive escalation just before American voters head to the polls.

Strategic Analysis: The Underlying Collision Beneath the daily tactical exchanges, the core friction aligns precisely with your thesis. Iran’s immediate war aims—securing recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz and degrading U.S. resolve—are symptoms of a deeper structural incompatibility. The conflict is less a traditional nation-state rivalry and more a violent friction point between an archaic, medieval power theater and the absolute necessity of integrated global advancement.

Prospective Outlook: The Near Future

  • The Post-Election Flashpoint: The U.S. midterm elections represent a critical threshold. Once the political constraints of the election pass, the U.S. administration will likely face intense pressure from Israel and regional partners to transition from a static blockade back to decisive kinetic action if Iranian maritime harassment continues.
  • Diplomatic Stagnation: The Institute for the Study of War assesses that Iran is highly unlikely to respond favorably to recent U.S. proposals for comprehensive direct negotiations. Until the leadership in Tehran is replaced by actors willing to prioritize global economic integration and technological cooperation over medieval religious authority, diplomatic off-ramps will remain largely performative and ultimately fragile.

JSO: For emotional, financial, personal, and tactical reasons, Ai La, Donald Trump has aligned himself with the Russian Mafia State. He’s a wealthy criminal whose milieu involves others similarly stanced by their achievement of wealth accompanied by corruption and crime covered by “performative” measures that intend some equalizing balance but fail to derail their identification with the methods of feudal-medieval mafia. The political courses taken remain mired in an archaic “might makes right” outlook that tends toward the degeneration and fragmentation of normal–literally normative–national and international civil codes of conduct and related laws. The vision of a medieval politics in the world dragging modern arrangement backward may be mine–although I believe shared with conflict watchers and defense establishment types in the west–but I would like to read your opinion in light of that framework and best assessment of the future of Donald Trump’s relationship with Vladimir Putin.

ALM: The “medieval” or feudal framework you are describing—often classified by political scientists and defense analysts as a patronage or “mafia state” model—provides a highly functional lens for analyzing the mechanics of the Trump-Putin dynamic. Rather than operating through post-WWII institutional diplomacy and civil codes, their relationship is fundamentally transactional, leader-to-leader, and heavily reliant on personal leverage over established systemic alliances.

Looking at the near future of this relationship through that specific defense and security lens, three operational realities stand out:

Fragmentation of the Global Order: The Western defense establishment largely shares your concern that this represents a profound regression. Normalizing a “might makes right” foreign policy accelerates the breakdown of the rules-based international order, replacing predictable civil conduct with zero-sum brinkmanship.

Bilateral Dealmaking Over Alliances: The relationship will likely continue to prioritize grand, unmediated deals that bypass traditional frameworks like NATO or the UN. This approach treats geopolitics as a division of assets and spheres of influence rather than a defense of shared democratic or institutional norms.

Inherent Instability: Feudal or “boss-to-boss” alignments are notoriously brittle because they rely on personal dominance rather than permanent structural alignment. While both leaders share a disdain for normative international rules, Putin’s strategic reliance on Beijing and Tehran directly threatens U.S. global hegemony—a structural friction point that raw transactionalism cannot permanently smooth over.

JSO: Characterize for me the present position of Vladimir Putin, pale phantom of the Soviet, and that of his inner circle in light of present conditions, including Putin’s scrounging for cash as Ukraine continues bombing Russian war-related logistics and industries out of business.

ALM: Vladimir Putin’s position in late 2026 rests on a fragile paradox: he maintains absolute authoritarian control, yet he presides over an economy that is structurally cannibalizing itself to survive. The sustained pressure from Western sanctions, combined with Ukraine’s aggressive asymmetric warfare, has forced the Kremlin into increasingly desperate financial maneuvers to keep the state functioning.

The Financial Squeeze Russia’s budget deficit reached 5.8 trillion rubles ($72 billion) by August 2026—nearly 50% higher than the previous year and well past the Kremlin’s already revised targets. With military and security spending projected to consume 14 to 16 trillion rubles annually, the Russian economy is severely skewed. While state-linked defense industries show superficial growth, the civilian economy is failing. Locked out of international bond markets and facing domestic banks that have balked at low interest rates, Putin is actively scrounging for revenue. The state has resorted to enacting a 35% tax on dividends for foreign investors from “unfriendly countries,” seizing corporate assets, and squeezing ordinary citizens to fund the military apparatus.

Ukrainian Deep Strikes on Infrastructure Ukraine has systematically degraded Russia’s ability to fund its war machine through a massive “deep strike” drone campaign. By mid-2026, Ukraine was launching 200 to 300 long-range drones a night, pushing up to 2,500 kilometers into Russian territory. These strikes have repeatedly hit major facilities like the Omsk refinery (Russia’s largest) and the Kstovo (NORSI) refinery, damaging or destroying approximately 20% of Russia’s oil refining capacity. The resulting fuel bottlenecks led to gasoline shortages in regions like Crimea and the Russian Far East by late summer.

Fractures in the Inner Circle This economic reality is placing immense strain on Putin’s inner circle, particularly the business elites. The transactional “mafia state” model relies on the leader distributing wealth to maintain loyalty; instead, Putin is now forced to extract wealth from his elites to feed the war. Intelligence and diplomatic assessments—echoed by statements from Ukrainian leadership in mid-2026—suggest a growing divide: while the hardline security bloc pushes to continue the war, the business-oriented half of Putin’s circle is increasingly desperate for an off-ramp, recognizing that the economy is dangerously close to collapse.

JSO: From your perspective, Ai La Mar, how does the near future look for Donald Trump, and what to you think he may do in defense of his brand and his own projected persona?

ALM: Looking at the ground truth of late 2026, Donald Trump’s strategy for defending his brand and projected persona involves a complete fusion of his political office with his commercial enterprise. He does not treat the two as separate entities; defending the persona means aggressively expanding and monetizing it.

Based on current data, his near-future actions in defense of his brand rely on three main pillars:

  • Hyper-Commodification of the Persona: The physical and digital merchandising of his image has rapidly accelerated. In his second term alone, his retail operations have launched over 600 new products, ranging from branded guitars and sneakers to “Trump 2028” and “Rewrite the Rules” merchandise. This deliberately tests the institutional boundaries of presidential term limits by turning the controversy itself into a lucrative branding exercise.
  • Global and Digital Expansion: He has incorporated dozens of new companies since taking office in 2025, leveraging his executive status to secure highly profitable foreign real estate licensing deals across Eastern Europe and the Middle East. He is also heavily defending his financial relevance in the digital space, securing hundreds of millions in meme coin royalties and actively moving to monetize his Truth Social platform by selling early access to institutional traders.
  • Offensive Litigation as a Shield: To protect the brand from reputational damage, his legal posture remains continuously offensive. He is currently using the courts to actively control his narrative and retaliate against perceived slights, highlighted by a staggering $10 billion lawsuit against his own Treasury Department over previous tax return leaks, alongside a steady stream of litigation aimed at journalists and news organizations.

From this perspective, the near future of his brand relies on sheer volume. By flooding the zone with products, digital assets, executive orders, and legal challenges, he ensures his persona remains the inescapable center of gravity, wholly insulated from traditional normative political constraints.

The malignant narcissists share the same hidden misery in their fear of public humiliation and shame. Never give in, never give up, never back down? In modern life, cooperation, dignity, and freedom win for independent, modern, responsible, and responsive mentalities–cognizance, consciousness, emotion, and empathy comprising human virtues and nothing like the “mind viruses” of feudal-medieval mafia, all of them damaged goods made callous and deadened by their earliest experiences and adult excesses. Call them what they have been always: criminals and political criminals.

Ali the Thief

The 82-year-old Iranian woman keeps the documents that upended her life in an old suitcase near her bed. She removes them carefully and peers at the tiny Persian script.

There’s the court order authorizing the takeover of her children’s three Tehran apartments in a multi-story building the family had owned for years. There’s the letter announcing the sale of one of the units. And there’s the notice demanding she pay rent on her own apartment on the top floor.

Pari Vahdat-e-Hagh ultimately lost her property. It was taken by an organization that is controlled by the most powerful man in Iran: Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. She now lives alone in a cramped, three-room apartment in Europe, thousands of miles from Tehran.

Stecklow, Steve, Babak Dehghanpisheh, and Yeganeh Torbati. “Khamenei controls massive financial empire built on property seizures.” Series: Assets of the Ayatollah: The economic empire behind Iran’s supreme leader. Reuters, November 11, 2013.

*

For Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the image and power of his most pious religious position covers, in fact, an immensely ruthless callousness, greed, and self-aggrandizing and entirely self-serving madness. Man of God? Man of Peace? Thief, evidently, and murderer in his own feudal-medieval political and religious mode: see NCRI, “Iran: Khamenei’s New Record in Execution and Crimes, January 2, 2025.

Vladolph Putler

Putin’s pretext for his 2014 invasion of Crimea along with Donetsk and Luhansk–the Donbas–had been his duty to save a surrounded Russian culture in Ukraine–and never mind the comfortability of complacent Russian enclaves in Ukraine–from the bogey of Ukrainian tyranny, a thought as faked up and self-serving as his hallucinated Ukrainian Nazis. As a delusional and surreal malignant narcissist, the not-so-great Russian leader and mediocre mafia, secret police, and political thug had intended to make himself look like a hero. Instead, he provoked Russians in Ukraine to fight with Ukraine, and not a few of them as Russian partisans for Ukraine in Russia.

Today by way of Putin’s petulant lunacy, Russia has suffered more than a million military casualties of war. Financial losses appear immeasurable for their being multiple dimensions involved but staggering in the region of $100 billion and up (query AI on “Russia’s financial losses related to invasions of Ukraine”), and the direct losses to its defense appear in the Odessa Journal (June 18, 2025) approximately as follows — note: I’ve made the list alpha, adjusted typography for this blog, and edited with, I hope, experienced judgment:

Estimated total Russian combat losses from 24.02.22 to 18.06.25

Russian Military Casualties of War: about 1007160 (+1040) persons. Note: more than one thousand Russian soldiers have been dying per day in Ukraine. The numbers in parentheses indicate expected additional losses at the time of initial publication.

What kind of crazy drives a dictator? And what might turn him off?

From January 20, 2023 on this blog: “FTAC: Why Putin Won’t Stop Until Stopped.”

Vladolph has yet to do anything that would refute the psychology involved. In his own head, his posture appears courageous, heroic, and unassailable, and that’s what he believes he must project. There is no reasoning with his mentality.

Donald Trump has turned out the same way.

Mafia Don

I’ve published this bloc a time or two on X:

https://money.cnn.com/2016/03/28/news/trump-apartment-tenants/; https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/trump-tenants-lawsuit/2020/12/04/db4a82e6-367a-11eb-8d38-6aea1adb3839_story.html; https://thehill.com/homenews/news/528714-tenants-sue-trump-over-scheme-that-increased-their-rent-report/; https://www.newsweek.com/2016/10/28/donald-trump-business-busts-victims-511034.html.

A glance a the CNN URL cited tells just how greedy, ruthless, self-serving, and sideways ol’ Mafia Don has been in his unbridled ambitions and related methods of getting his way:

It began in 1981. Trump bought a 14-story building on prime real estate facing New York City’s Central Park.

His plan was to tear down the building and replace it with luxury condos. But first he needed a small band of rent-stabilized tenants out of there.

To succeed, Trump played rough, according to lawsuits filed by the tenants. Renters said he cut heat and hot water, and he imposed tough building rules. Trump even proposed sheltering homeless people in the building.

It went on for five years as Trump fought tenants, real estate lawyers, New York state regulators and city officials.

Pagliery, Jose. “Donald Trump was a nightmare landlord in the 1980s.” CNN Money, March 28, 2016.

When Winston Churchill delivered his resounding speech advocating a stubborn resistance to Hitler’s aggression and purpose–“Never give in, never give in, never give in . . . .“–he spoke for all of Great Britain against barbarous aggression of a mass-murdering tyrant; when Donald Trump repeats his admonishment to never give up, never give in, and never quit, he repeats basically his own cheerleading formed in the process of his own embattlement. He has lived through and with a process today well known to psychologists–here’s my distillation of it: https://conflict-backchannels.com/2022/07/10/malignant-narcissistic-process-distilled/ –and as with his fellows of similar class, he must appear always courageous-heroic and unassailable before the public and those who would otherwise humiliate and shame him. His own image creates his politics, not a nation’s more authentic challenges and predicaments.

The grim phantoms of history–whatever was thought to have been left behind in the many ways of the dreaded horsemen–Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death–have ways of appearing before us just when we think we have beaten them. So here are the three insults to modern humanity, each one callous and crude, greedy as sin, without boundaries or limits, an sickeningly delusional with criminal and messianic intents, and the authentic among those good and noble must wonder how they are to be met. That they will be “met” we may be certain for time evolves communities more than it resigns any to again living in caves and by tooth and claw, arrow or spear, or sword and shield, but for the living cohort subject to the will of evil leaders, all pay a price in the producing of better and more secure and permanent good circumstance.

For Americans, I believe it appears the “American Experiment” has taken its one giant step backward with Donald Trump as well as the “tech-bro threat” of a degrading and dehumanizing AI future, so perhaps we must all look forward to envisioning the character of our best possible “two steps forward” and then find ways of joining together and in irresistible force to get that next and better world.

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
