Whatever the merits or demerits of the United States-led nuclear agreement between the P5+1 and Iran, the sales job that some of its supporters are making for it is concerning enough on its own. Rather than argue for the deal in substantive terms, they have descended into attempts to delegitimate opponents as disloyal or worse.
Not content with smearing congressional opponents as being of a piece with Iranian hard-liners, as U.S. President Barack Obama did in a recent speech, the White House and its allies have come dangerously close to invoking the old anti-Semitic trope of “dual loyalties” to discredit Jewish opponents of the deal.
To be sure, Jews, wherever they may live around the world, will always have an understandable concern for the safety and security of the State of Israel. For its part, Israel has wholly legitimate concerns about the Iran deal, ably articulated by its prime minister…
