FTAC – Note About 21 C. Feudalism

04 Wednesday Mar 2015

Everybody wants money!
And so they — and Obama — are racing to acquire income any which way. The 21st Century Feudalism involves tying up that wealth in concentration in as few hands as as possible — “Putin’s Way”.
This is politics too much about money.
Re. Obama — he’s emphasized the American economy in his effort! Others, perhaps, have emphasized themselves as controlling vast wealth.

Examination of the American economy, “America Inc.”  and its distributions opens on to a broad and multidimensional field of study.  However, it may be fair to suggest at this lightest and most superficial level that despite issues available to the rabble rousing far left, earnings and distribution overall have recovered from the real estate crash of 2006-7 and the dollar has been strong, perhaps too strong.  Still, compared to the “state capitalism” shepherded into Russia by Putin, Obama’s America retains its more broadly open character.

FTAC – On Popular Democracies

Real democracies work: they educate their children, not just some children; they elicit political and policy opinion from the floor of the culture on up to high office; adult voting is universal and enfranchisement and empowerment and inclusion in other ways are continuously sought. While it’s somewhat true that “democracies get the government they deserve,” a great democracy strives to produce an even greater people by way of encouraging both community and personal development to the extent possible in freedom.

As regards “Hamafia’s” elections, I recall blood in the streets in 2006 as signifying they kind of “democracy” Hamas invests in, and much to its own benefit: Khaled Mashaal and Ismail Haniyeh are billionaires today, not that “their people” — one wonder what beside intimidation and payoffs keep the same “their people” — benefit from that accumulation of wealth. Ditto for most Russians off to the side of Putin’s “vertical of power” — or on the streets outside of Erdogan’s new “White Palace”. That list grows long.

 Addendum – Same Conversation

They should lament the “loss of liberties” because the very small things, i.e., how to dress, presage the very large and dark things: murder and tyranny.

When the Jews left Pharaoh, they must have not only been responding to the tyrant’s behavior but the human urge to abandon that kind of power and live elsewhere. In the Torah, the Jews are joined in their exodus by a “mixed multitude”. Now, as then, some “get it” but the God that makes the spinning cloud and parts the waters of the Red Sea with its wind may be less obvious in evidence. The secret: it must have been in the humanity of the Jews and that “mixed multitude” to reject Pharaoh, leave that course, and never look back.

India has joined Israel in defense and trade, and relations have been on the upswing at least into December. I should think the attack in Mumbai not easily forgotten in that regard.

What comes up here in Shia-Israel and what is thematic in other relationships is that yesterday’s social reality can be ejected and not put in front of all of us. We can take it apart, and, from time to time, we have to take apart some assumptions and beliefs and move forward of them — leave the despotic, make a miraculous crossing, and wander around lost but within the terrain of a greater faith and humanity.

Hidden behind this one-sided presentation of a conversation: the cylinder of Cyrus the Great, a first humanist statement of human values and rights.  The suggestion: Khamenei wants the esteem of the Arab world, and he has gone against the grain of Persia to get it.  Moreover, his regime represents what is despotic, piratical, and tyrannical in history, and the regime has made him in that regard a modern “pharaoh” a cult personality to be likened unto . . . God, but his regime comes up short by way of Evin Prison, the suffering in Syria (including the suffering of the Palestinian Yarmouk Camp at the hands of the Khamenei-backed Assad regime), and its billius rhetoric about the “Zionist regime”, without which even the poorest of Iran’s constituents might just see their leadership for the enterprise it has become.

Opposition activists say Syrian warplanes launched rockets at the Palestinian refugee camp known as Yarmouk.

At least 25 people have been killed in the Yarmouk refugee camp in southern Damascus. Syrian fighter-bombers fired at least one miss.

Introducing 21st Century Neo-Feudalism

21st Century Neo-Feudalism, Obama

One hesitates to add to “Red Brown Green” — fascism anchored by Putin-Khamenei and the KGB-FSA-VEVAK nexus (attach: Assad, Orban, Erdogan) — a potential Red-Blue “nobility”.  However, the democratic open societies must contend with their wealthy — and the will of the wealthy — as well.

In 1980, Feinstein married Richard C. Blum, an investment banker. In 2003, Feinstein was ranked the fifth-wealthiest senator, with an estimated net worth of $26 million.[10] By 2005 her net worth had increased to between $43 million and $99 million.[11] Her 347-page financial-disclosure statement[12] – characterized by the San Francisco Chronicle as “nearly the size of a phone book” – draws clear lines between her assets and those of her husband, with many of her assets in blind trusts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dianne_Feinstein – As viewed 3/2/2014

And what’s the walk she talkin’ today?

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Sunday that it was “arrogant” for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to presume to speak for all Jews on a potential nuclear deal between the United States and Iran.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2015/03/01/dianne-feinstein-benjamin-netanyahu_n_6778748.html – 3/1-2/2015.

Let’s take a look at some other respectable sum of money (concentrated around one person):

The J Street lobbying group is running a media campaign opposing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s March 3 speech to the U.S. Congress.
J Street claims to be “the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans” but is seen by its critics as a far-left, intolerant lobbying group funded by George Soros, that in no way represents American Jews and friends of Israel.

The Opaque White House

Where is Obama in relation to the cauldron of political poison brewed up on the now fascist far left (post-Soviet, neo-feudal, Putinesque, global)?

In reference below, I’ve included some views on American wealth, class, and related politics, i.e., a new politics of the wealthy.  (By way of disclosure, this editor is like the “lawn jockey”, i.e., on the property – housed and fed – but outside the house: the editor does not enjoy even the pleasure of owning a lawn).

While the White House puts animus toward Israel on display, it has nevertheless not “broken” with Israel in numerous areas of practical defense (if not diplomacy).

Then too, while it pumps for social democratic perennials like hikes in the minimum wage, assessing the American left and far left’s own greed and penury wants for some new body of research.

California produces more new billionaires than any place this side of oligarchic Russia or crony capitalist China. By some estimates the Golden State is home to one out of every nine of the world’s billionaires. In 2011 the state was home to 90 billionaires, 20 more than second place New York and more than twice as many as booming Texas.

The state’s digital oligarchy, surely without intention, is increasingly driving the state’s lurch towards feudalism. Silicon Valley’s wealth reflects the fortunes of a handful of companies that dominate an information economy that itself is increasingly oligopolistic. In contrast to the traditionally conservative or libertarian ethos of the entrepreneurial class, the oligarchy is increasingly allied with the nominally populist Democratic Party and its regulatory agenda. Along with the public sector, Hollywood, and their media claque, they present California as “the spiritual inspiration” for modern “progressives” across the country.

The president will arrive on Tuesday night with a 900-strong entourage, including 45 vehicles and three cargo planes. Advance security teams orchestrating every last detail have combed Brussels already, checking the sewers and the major hospitals, while American military helicopters were last week given the green light for overflights. The city hosts at least four EU summits a year, with each of these gatherings costing €500,000 in extra police, military and transport expenses. “But this time round, you can multiply that figure by 20,” said Brussels mayor, Yvan Mayeur.

Cendrowicz, Leo.  “Barack Obama’s first visit to Brussels to cost Belgium more than €10m.”  The Guardian, March 24, 2014.

With chides like “Colonel, President, Emperor Putin”, the rhetoric has the support of the “The Russian Section” readings plus more than enough reportage on neo-medieval adventures.

With President Barack Hussein Obama, there’s less track in either American history — the Nixon White House caught the “Imperial Presidency“ label for what that President wished to do with guard uniforms, and it too became an informationally dark presidency — and we know how it ended.  Were BackChannels to knock out a casual “President Caliph Obama”, it would have to be with animosity rather than curiosity matched by observation: he’s just not that.

What may be worrisome is how Obama fits with the presumably opposed spine form by “Putin-Assad-Khamenei”, about whose cooperation should be at this point beyond question.

Add: Putin-Orban (an easy lookup online) and Putin-(khamenei)-Erdogan, where more takes place “behind the curtains” but the style — everyone wants to live in a White Palace! — seems congruent across borders and state interests.

Should one suggest “Putin-Khamenei-Obama” as a unit?

What a troika!

However, I haven’t the data that would bring Obama visibly into the neo-feudal fold, as good as he may be at “political theater” and the separation of a surface politics from the underlying engine room in which his Administration’s realpolitik would seem invented and adjusted.

Post-KGB, now FSB and neo-feudal Putin carry forward the onus of known KGB-Era behavior.

Obama stands forward of only — for the purposes of comparison — the CIA and FBI, which have reputations that overall curry the favor of the American constituency: the press notes their histories and their mistakes, but they are security agencies (include with them Homeland Security, NSA, and all of the defense intelligence offices) believed by the broadest part of the constituency to be operating in the interests of the American public in its totality — and the American Constitution — as opposed to the interests primarily of either America’s plutocrats or America’s “military-industrial complex”.

The Kremlin doesn’t invent anti-European or anti-establishment ideas, it simply supports them in whatever form they exist, customising their tactics to suit each country. They’ll support the far left or the far right — in Greece they support both. Despite its economic plight, the new Greek government’s first act was not a protest against European economic policy but a protest against sanctions on Russia. Only then did it tell its European creditors that it might not pay them back.

The following section has appeared already once on BackChannels but it bears repeating and may be seen in several locations as the fray between the neo-feudal dictatorships and the democratic open societies becomes more obvious and pressing.

Red Brown Green

Red = Soviet, post-Soviet, Putinesque neo-feudal Russia.

Brown = New Nationalist Movements — an allusion to the drifts of Orban’s Hungary and a part of the mix involved in Erdogan’s Turkey.

Green = Islamofascism generally with Ayatollah Khamenei possibly the most central element in driving the form worldwide, from Daesh in Iraq to Hezbollah in Argentina.

Is it too soon to add Nicolás Maduro?

*If ever a head of state has experienced an “Oh F***” moment, it has to be Cristina Kirchner who has found herself and her government in the glare of intense global scrutiny in the wake of the death of of Alberto Nisman.  The world has gotten the sense of what would inform her motivation to have Nisman out of the way, and now — as I read the news — it appears the global “Red Brown Green” aspect of a revanch post-Soviet neo-feudal Russia (revanch for those who enjoy privilege at any cost to others, including their own greater constituencies) has become clear as well.

News from Yemen (from back in the USSR/RF) —

During the meeting, the Houthi delegation promised an array of lucrative contracts in exchange for Moscow’s recognition of the Ansarullah’s authority.

The delegation assured that the Houthis will soon take control of oil-rich Marib Province, which they say will yield billions of dollars per day.

The abandonment of principle characterizes the geopolitical space operated by The New Gang of Bad Little Boys (and Perhaps One Girl).  No doubt, however, these play hard among themselves as well, but before the press approaches internecine differences, it’s just as well to note the cooperation between “political absolutists” disregarding the ideological and state interests that would be otherwise ascribed to them.  As malignant narcissists — every one of them — what they have in common is the possession and want of immense power and wealth in service to their securing boundless “narcissistic supply” — they would be in their own halls of mirrors eternally glorious — and some day to be remembered as such (or else!).

Maduro “Wishes to Visit Ecuador”

Waiting to pounce on me from my inbox this morning: “Please report that Nicolas Maduro wants to visit Ecuador to seek international support . . . .”

My correspondent alludes to a source within Ecuador’s government: ” . . . the visit will be in April or June . . . .”

Is this really such a good time — a good year even — for travel?

With a country, one cannot simply water the plants, check the faucets, lock the doors and leave, and this is not such a good time for Nicolas Maduro for doing even so little as that.

Reuters reported Tuesday, “A teenager was fatally shot at an anti-government protest in the western city of San Cristobal on Tuesday, state officials said, exacerbating tensions in Venezuela amid an economic crisis and crackdown on the political opposition.”

Kluiver Roa was 14 years old.  His father was reputed to be a member of opposition party Copei.  Although an arrest was made, Reuters reporters found cause to call the crime scene circumstances — what actually happened — “confusing”.

Currency devaluation, plunging oil revenues, shortages — no wonder violence has broken out on the streets.

Connection Red Brown Green

Camouflaged police smashed into the mayor’s office and carried him away . . . Mr Ledezma was on a list of people and foreign powers named by Mr Maduro last week as attempting to bring down his administration.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-31545963 – 2/19/2015.

Reliant on mineral wealth for wealth, the “Red Brown Green” arc of power’s extension into developing South American economies may be suffering from the same malady: the west’s intent to finish off the Soviet Empire.

It has been about 25 years since the Soviet dissolved without also dissolving the “perks” of the Party privileged and all of its direct associates, including associate leadership in distant states.

Is the Party over?

It appears the power mad — political species “Narcissus communist proto-fascist”  — were dependent on climbing oil revenues — the miraculous abundance of “black gold”, and all of it theirs for the taking — for sustaining and growing both the functional and symbolic elements of power within their spheres of control, from state’s military equipage to the payouts in patronage that created the “nomenklatura”, which along today’s neo-feudal path appears to be a “Newest Nobility”, now rapidly deflating while being urged toward productive development investment — including investment in human development — and (gasp!) rule of law.

Financially strangling, the politically dying may be expected to put their people in their own place first, i.e., the privileged may be counted on to make themselves the last to give up privilege.

End Games, New Games

In the Awesome Conversation on Facebook, I often remind that Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe — another old Soviet tentacle — remains in power.  What he has done to Zimbabweans, including the reintroduction of cholera in relation to withholding from a rival funds for water sanitation chemicals, seems of no account: in the “one man, one vote, one time” democratic ways of much of Africa, Mugabe will celebrate turning 91 this Saturday.

Although no less than Vladimir Putin has called Mugabe a dictator (at least once and back in 2009), which is sayin’ somethin’, the point is the worst of national leaders, truly despots, have long demonstrated their possession of the means, wherewithal, and will for remaining in power to the natural end of their lives.

As our “malignant narcissists” appear to reject criticism, eliminate rivals, and cultivate a ceaseless “narcissistic supply“, one must expect politically geological aftershocks — or revanch birth pangs — basically kicking (whether leaving the world or coming into it) from the Fall of the Soviet Union and the latest squeeze on the oxygen supply that is cold hard cash at the wellhead.

Update – February 27, 2015

The regime’s favourite charge to level at hostile politicians is plotting to overthrow the government, often in conspiracy with the United States. But it is the president, Nicolás Maduro, who is staging a coup against the last vestiges of democracy. Venezuelans call it an autogolpe, or “self-coup”.

The massive Gaza protests this year, organized by the Workers World Party, were about promoting antisemitism rather than concern for Palestinians. These protests excluded Arab voices so they could be free to demonize Israel. Worldwide, almost each time Syrian Palestinians brought a Free Syrian flag to protests, they were met with harassment, and, in some cases, violence. As one Palestinian woman from the Yarmouk Ghetto of Syria said, “We have been used.”

Antisemitism has been used to silence non-Jewish activists opposed to Russia and Iran.

Fascism Red Brown Green continues to develop rapidly while Washington applies some brakes — sanctions, reductions in oil revenues by way of whatever forces and machinations adjust those downward — but nonetheless looks on while Syrians (and the last of the refugees of 1948 holed up in Yarmouk Camp) continue with immense suffering, while Orban and Erdogan continue their drift toward “political absolutism”, and the Khamenei regime fails not only to upgrade its humanity but succeeds spectacularly in pirating from the Persians.

Soviet interest in anti-Semitic expression follows a similar course: deflection of attention from its own evildoing, which includes the bureaucratic and military raiding of the assets of others — from farms to factories — on its own soil or within its own sphere of control.

But since the event was on Shabbat, Lazar initially declined the invitation, explaining he was prevented from carrying documents, among other religious restrictions.

So Putin ordered his staff to prepare an alternative entrance and security-free route just for the rabbi, according to one of Lazar’s top associates, Rabbi Boruch Gorin.

“It is unusual, but the security detail acted like kosher supervisors so Rabbi Lazar could attend,” Gorin said.

To him, the Sochi anecdote illustrates Putin’s positive attitude toward Russian Jewry — an attitude Gorin says is sincere, unprecedented in Russian history and hugely beneficial for Jewish life in the country.

In the image-creating object-moving machinations of an absolute political authority (AKA “dictator”, “malignant narcissist”, “ruler”, etc.), the Jews and Israel may be made into the proverbial “football” and kicked between “teams”, the “anti- anti-Semitism” card proving as effective as, perhaps more powerful than, the common adoption of anti-Semitic stance to whip up popular fervor for “the father”, the abu, one or another of the kind of authority inclined to march their people into financial bankruptcy and spiritual ruin.

At the poker table, a card withheld signals threat — it might be nothing . . . or it could trump what the opponent holds.

Putin knows both poker-faced confrontation and the power of a few judicious words, but it’s just those characteristics that may symbolize also the intent of the “vertical of power” (a phrase paired with Putin in eternal metonymy) to measure his progress — and Russia’s progress, although “MosVegas” leaves a large portion of Russians hungry and ignored (Reference: Judah, Ben. Fragile Empire: How Russia Fell In and Out of Love with Vladimir Putin. New Haven and London: Yale University Press, 2013) — by way of amassed control, wealth, and power — and more the lawless power to inhibit, thieve, and terrify than invest capital and yield statewide economic development, which are complaints voiced in the books comprising this blog’s “Russian Section”.

Similarly feudal structure may be found with Khamenei — the Wikipedia from which the above screenshot was made has been in its editing history contested back and forth, rather attacked like the Reuter’s piece about the Ayatollah’s wealth — and Erdogan (with his “White Palace”) and Viktor Orban as scion of a powerful family (related: http://www.freehungary.hu/index.php/archives-new/54-hirek/friss-hirek/2108-gyurcsany-about-the-extremely-wealthy-orban – 7/29/2013).

. . . that unrestrained immigration, failure to adapt to the Western life, non-existent border policy and political correctness will kill more people unless the leaders of the European Union themselves choose to do something about it. Because, make no mistake about it, unless we put an end to the endless religious intimidation and bullying, we have only ourselves to blame, and the dream of a nations of Europe will crumble in no time. The European Union has to make a stand if it does not want another Paris, London or Madrid. It has to call a spade a spade and say it clearly and unequivocally that the problem lies with Islamic fundamentalism. No matter if it is called Hamas, Isis, Islamic Jihad or Al-Qaida, it is here, and it is ready to wreak havoc on the values of liberty. The EU has to make clear that honour killings, forced marriages, travelling jihadists in and out of Europe and hate fuelled sermons from certain mosques, inciting hatred against jews, christians and everything that the West stands for, is not acceptable.

Red.

Brown.

Green.

Perhaps Green is the plaything of Red – or Red is the plaything of Green, and then both Red-Green influence Brown, Green, and Red beyond all borders.

Billionaires Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashaal may serve the Newest Global Nobility — or it serve them — but as at the start of this post, none appear to be serving the refugees holed up in Yarmouk Camp.  (Related and more recent: http://jordantimes.com/hunger-death-in-besieged-yarmouk-camp-for-palestinian-refugees – 1/15/2014).

That may be okay considering such as Putin, Assad, Khamenei, Orban, and Erdogan may not be serving their own constituents all that much either — but then why should they?  They’re living in palaces — or intending as much — and the lives of others — reddish, brownish, white, or of any other caste or color — would appear to matter so much less to each.

“In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is…in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”
― Theodore Dalrymple

What seems to be missing is addressing the problem, and the problems that surround it, with a truly hard look, and with discussion. What, for instance, should we in the West really be doing about the many statements by Muslims that they feel “offended” and see themselves as victims — all coupled with an apparent inability to see that modern-day slavery, the treatment of non-Muslims in Muslim countries, or even Muslims of other sects; not to mention throwing homosexuals off buildings, beheadings, stonings and burning people alive — might offend others?

In other words, in some Muslims, there often seems to be a pronounced lack of empathy that apparently creates a fluctuation between a mentality that is sometimes passive (victim) and sometimes aggressive (dominating).

During the last year or so Viktor Orbán has been busy trying to appease the European Union while hoping to get added benefits from Russia.

To his domestic critics Orbán’s performance yesterday was embarrassingly subservient. Attila Ara-Kovács, the foreign policy adviser to the Demokratikus Koalíció, described Putin as “a landlord” who came to look around his estate while Orbán the bailiff stood by, awaiting the master’s orders.

In Budapest late on Monday, about 1,000 people protested against Putin’s visit.

“We don’t agree with the fact that Viktor Orban receives Putin while the leaders of democratic Europe do not receive him,” said 57-year-old protester Gabor Faradi. He held a banner which read “We won’t be a Russian colony”.

Epigram

Hillel the Elder

"That which is distasteful to thee do not do to another. That is the whole of Torah. The rest is commentary. Now go and study."

"If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, what am I? If not now, when?"

"Whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world."

Oriana Fallaci
"Whether it comes from a despotic sovereign or an elected president, from a murderous general or a beloved leader, I see power as an inhuman and hateful phenomenon...I have always looked on disobedience toward the oppressive as the only way to use the miracle of having been born."

Qohelet Raba, 7:16

אכזרי סוף שנעשה אכזרי במקום רחמן

Kol mi shena`asa rahaman bimqom akhzari Sof shena`asa akhzari bimqom rahaman

All who are made to be compassionate in the place of the cruel In the end are made to be cruel in the place of the compassionate.

More colloquially translated: "Those who are kind to the cruel, in the end will be cruel to the kind."

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

Positively Orwellian: Comment Responding to Claim that the Arab Assault on Israel in 1948 Had Not Intended Annihilation

“Revisionism” is the most contemptible path that power takes to abet theft and hide shame by attempting to alter public perception of past events.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
