Viktor Yanukovich, whose overthrow last month after protests triggered the gravest crisis in Europe since the Cold War, insisted from his refuge in Russia that he was still Ukraine’s legitimate president and commander of its armed forces.

“I want to remind you that I am not only still the legitimate president of Ukraine but also the supreme commander of the army and I haven’t stopped my duties as president early – I am still alive.”

Malignant narcissism?

Facsimile Bipolar Narcissistic Sociopathy?

I’d say so.

Borrowing from the Putin-Assad-Khamenei show in the middle east, I would further suggest Yanukovych has no tears, no real ones, for any of dead, injured, and maimed of Euromaidan.  He lost the confidence of his people; he lost the streets; he lost his properties.  Now he’ll pout and throw a tantrum, if he can, with the help of Uncle Vlad.

Perhaps the less they are on the inside, the larger despots wish to look on the outside.

“The ultimate cause of our instability is not religious but political, because whoever comes to power makes his entourage commit abuses to stay in power,” he said, “They treat the country as their private money-making business. We need a real democracy with politicians who have a vision to look after the needs of everyone.”

Riptide – Foreign Policy – Peter Bouckaert – 1/31/2014.

I didn’t want to get this blog on to Congo before it’s time, but, conflict is conflict, this is a blog about that, and I really don’t see any difference in worthiness between a Burmese tribe ethnically cleansing another (and hanging children along the way) and some other conflict zone horror involving killing by “machetes, torture, lynching, shooting, explosions, and burning,” which list you will find in the lead to the above cited story by Peter Bouckaert.

Then too, as with Syria and its brutal and mindless dictatorship opposed by an equally brutal and mindless al-Qaeda laden devolutionary force, one may notice the relative helplessness of noncombatant constituents on the land: they’re trapped between monsters, and the monsters are of similar kind: “malignant narcissists”.

Little dictators.

Modify that some: “little dictators with “Advanced Small Weapons” and lots of primitive ones as well and nothing of conscience, only greed offsetting fear and filling up enormous egos and their ambitions.

This strain in mankind — not the peacock per se, but the vicious peacock — proves a disaster wherever it appears.

FTAC – Solving the Problems of the World at the Dinner Table

four universal virtues, goodness, humanity, Islam, reform, reformation, virtue

For a global standard in values, I’ve been promoting just four virtues: compassion, humility, inclusion, integrity. With those four embraced, a lot of problems start to go away and more things can be done to get improvements in “qualities of living” for the living everywhere.

As regards Islamic Reformation, I sometimes want an Obi Wan moment to say to one proponent of one thing or another, “The goodness, K, is in you, not the Qur’an, the Torah, the Second Testament. God cannot be taken from the good, for such may be emergent within the humanity of humanity.

Referencing psychology, the keys on which I harp: bipolar and narcissistic personality disorders / “Facsimile Bipolar Political Sociopathy (the psychology of dictators) / “civilizational narcissism” Mobarak Haider’s term; in cognitive psychology and language behavior, one may note that while we don’t always see things the same way (the truth is we seldom do), we can look into that together and together diminish an entire class or dimension in contemporary armed conflict.

Oh how we used to fight, my father and me.

Today, he’s gone, and I get to win some.

At least in my own head.

And the “dinner table” — the forum for “lively” (brutal) political discussion:  Facebook.

If any readers should be with me on all of this: let’s keep it simple.

FTAC – Narcissism and the Scapegoat

narcissism, political psychology, scapegoating

If one perceives one’s self in a weak or threatened position when one is by default the strong party (“leaders” are not often referred to as “fathers” for nothing, especially in autocratic environments) then the deflection of attention and concern from one’s own position to that of a less-liked or neutral party becomes part of sustaining power plus service, and the service is . . . narcissistic supply!

If you took the notion of “scapegoating” as an apparent behavior — what’s bad in us we give to this goat that we then expel from our presence and leave to God and nature outside of the camp — the mechanism in political and social (and family) reasoning may be as suggested. If it seems so, then we may have something to work with as as much has been designed in the invention of language and maintained in suspension within circles affected, and that from family relationships and outward to clans, tribes, federations, and states.

Basically, if there’s a serious “Big Daddy” who must be served or a “SWMBO” (“She Who Must Be Obeyed”) in a a political space, family to state, the absence of an “off button” in each might signal the presence of a personality that will exploit dependents in the cause of its own aggrandizement.

The first problem faced in solving any problem is the problem of defining the problem — 🙂 — and doing so in a way that “locks” with reality, i.e., that, thank God, appears to work with good reasons for its working.

As much as we may need magic in life, and I believe we do, some conditions beg for having or obtaining a firm grasp on the emotional mechanics in their creation and longevity.  Not all wars need conform to so psychological an approach to conflict motivation, but those that do might lend themselves to this line in analysis in which, in essence, the narcissist creates the dependent (via infantilizing, patronizing, and punitive manipulation) who then reinforces the heroic (or suffering martyr) self-concept suspended in language within the same.

If God seems at times to have a wicked sense of humor, perhaps it comes out most in the working of so miserable and vicious a piece of social engineering.

The Cinderella fairy tale (the story about two big sisters and their good-for-nothing youngest sister / two evil sisters and their bullied sister who get the better of them) has the form as do states owned and run into the ground by dictators who with the help of thugs devour the majority part of their constituencies.

“Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it” (Deuteronomy 34:4).

What complicates things, perhaps, and may make “Thou shall not lie” not so simple is the character of our narcissism and its frailty as suggested by the statistically limited presence but nonetheless disruptive propensity for self-delusion. In psychology proper, both bipolar and narcissistic personality disorder include as symptomatic grandiose delusion; in the social psychology of politics and in relation to “malignant narcissism” the hallucinatory aspect takes on robes. Muammar Qaddafi may stand signal to the strain in leadership but many dictators may be a little more subtle about their system of self-aggrandizement, control, and narcissistic supply. Entertain the frightening possibility that the dictator believes in his special relationship with God and whatever lies may attend the support of that illustrious delusion.

Do I really have to read the Torah?

On Facebook, we may be trading Bible and Qur’an passages about the same things for a while.

I suggested yesterday that all Jews know the experience of leaving Pharaoh, that most perfect emblem of malignant narcissism, and all the men die having reached the banks of their own Jordan River.

We do read differently, an observation that on this blog leads back to the human language experience as it begins with hearing in the womb and our essential life force, moves rapidly into receiving-organizing program development and later script reception or reception of the specific cultural surround.

London: Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper has published satellite images that it says prove Iran is developing a second path to a nuclear weapons capability by operating a plant that could produce plutonium.
The images – commissioned by the Telegraph and taken as recently as February 9 – show steam rising at the heavily-guarded Arak heavy water production plant, about 240 kilometres south-west of the capital Tehran. International inspectors have been barred from the plant since August 2011.

Iran’s Mullahs, with the aid of the beguiled illiterate and religiously fanatic masses, strengthened their stranglehold as they blamed others for their incompetence and larcenous nature for the people’s intractable problems. The ever-machinating Mullahs had to find a scapegoat, preferably many scapegoats, to blame. True to form they turned and bit the hand that helped bring them to power — the United States. For good measure, the Mullahs included Israel. Jews have always been good scapegoats for Islamists, going back to the time of Muhammad in Medina. The prophet of Allah, as soon as he gathered enough power, found it expedient to plunder the Jews’ properties, kill the men and take the women and children as slaves to exploit or sell.

Iran, once OPEC’s second-largest producer, is talking with European companies about future projects, Bijan Namdar Zanganeh told reporters today in Vienna. The minister said he hopes Exxon Mobil Corp. Iranian officials will meet with international companies in London in March, he said, declining to identify them.

The Islamic republic agreed last month to restrict work on its nuclear program for six months in return for a loosening of sanctions that offers about $7 billion in relief and access to $4.2 billion in oil revenue frozen in foreign banks.

FTAC – Assertion Regarding the Malignant Aspect in Vanity

license, malignant narcissism, political psychology

A note on narcissism and vanity: both are to be found universally in the human experience. The aspect of malignancy is social and transactional — it has to do with HOW we do our thing and what we might do to others to do it. The difference is that between fair dealing and mafia dealing; also between accountable and open democracy — if you can get it — and corrupt and thuggish tyranny; also between a president that preserves a democratic constitution and relinquishes power at the end of his term, and one who manipulates the law and his political surrounds to keep himself central to power and in power.

The subject of a sociopathic narcissism came up on a wall, and after putting in my two cents with “Facsimile Bipolar Political Sociopathy” — now a hobbyhorse of a phrase — I thought to give just a little more thought to what is contextual, what might better suit Hollywood than Washington, what is normal — or we should be without air conditioning, golf courses, and Cadillacs — and what is malign.

A part of “malignant narcissism” would seem to involve “license”, i.e., absence of conscience in regard to others and no brakes on behavior associated with boundaries, propriety, and, down the line, sadism as a dimension in the capricious and ultimate control of others.

As much the treatment of Shweyga Mullah within the Qaddafi household (at the hands of daughter-in-law Aline) stands signal (with much else from that regime) as to how crazed and depraved that cruelty may become.

“License” — perhaps Muhammad would have applied the term “exceeding limits” — seems to me a late expression along a curve that may find a basis in language (from the uptake stage) and “narcissistic mortification” for its path that will, for the person so affected, inevitably lead to the dehumanization and discounting of others.

FTAC – Genocide – A Note

evil, genocidal souls, genocide

It may help to think of evil — and to know evil — as a latent or potential bloom within any population and one that may be connected to political ends. However, the primary switch, whether with Dachau or Rwanda involves the taking of license (yes, like 007) which may be a subject worth some focus. In psychopathology, one notes the loss of boundaries involved in bipolar and narcissistic personality disorders; in the complex social disorders that become of interest in political psychology, analogs may apply: who are these people who in Kenya would commandeer a mall expressly to murder non-Muslims without any moral compunction — only pseudo moral excuse — and with ferocious and unbridled sadism? Those are the same souls, or kinds of souls, we are talking about whether talking about frenzied Catholics, Nazis, Hutus, or Janjaweed.

I’m not going to add much to the above.

I think we understand the Pharaoh confronted by Moses as the analog “malignant narcissist” or, in the modern outlook, the glorious dictator, the template for all who would dress proudly while up to their pants’ cuffs in their own constituent’s blood.

What is of interest here is whether mankind might acquire the brights to get its nets around this facet of human wildness and cage or channel it for a coming age in which energy resources, trade systems, and related economic and political arrangements may depend mightily on the global ability to defend them from, basically, magnificent assholes and the damage they would do as long as enabled by either surrounding fear, incompetence, or passivity.

In Syria at the moment, both Bashar al Assad and the Al Qaeda groups have made plain their inabilities as regards containing themselves.  They are those whose days have already passed and with every atrocity and injustice left in their wake they are helping the present and future politics overtake them.

What I Have Said About the Jews

My people, not that I speak for them, I nonetheless describe as a "global ethnic commune with its heart in Jerusalem and soul in the Land of Israel."

We have never given up on God, nor have we ever given up on one another.

Many things we have given up, but no one misses, say, animal sacrifice, and as many things we have kept, so we have still to welcome our Sabbath on Friday at sunset and to rest all of Saturday until three stars appear in the sky.

Most of all, through 5,773 years, wherever life has taken us, through the greatest triumphs and the most awful tragedies, we have preserved our tribal identity and soul, and so shall we continue eternally.

Anti-Semitism / Anti-Zionism = Signal of Fascism

I may suggest that anti-Zionism / anti-Semitism are signal (a little bit) of fascist urges, and the Left -- I'm an old liberal: I know my heart -- has been vulnerable to manipulation by what appears to me as a "Red Brown Green Alliance" driven by a handful of powerful autocrats intent on sustaining a medieval worldview in service to their own glorification. (And there I will stop).
One hopes for knowledge to allay fear; one hopes for love to overmatch hate.

Too often, the security found in the parroting of a loyal lie outweighs the integrity to be earned in confronting and voicing an uncomfortable truth.

Those who make their followers believe absurdities may also make them commit atrocities.

Positively Orwellian: Comment Responding to Claim that the Arab Assault on Israel in 1948 Had Not Intended Annihilation

“Revisionism” is the most contemptible path that power takes to abet theft and hide shame by attempting to alter public perception of past events.

On Press Freedom, Commentary, and Journalism

In the free world, talent -- editors, graphic artists, researchers, writers -- gravitate toward the organizations that suit their interests and values. The result: high integrity and highly reliable reportage and both responsible and thoughtful reasoning.

This is not to suggest that partisan presses don't exist or that propaganda doesn't exist in the west, but any reader possessed of critical thinking ability and genuine independence -- not bought, not programmed -- is certainly free to evaluate the works of earnest reporters and scholars.
